Proud bearer of Olympic torch

It was the moment of greatest joy for Ludhiana- born Puneet Gupta when he carried the Olympic Torch in Lausanne, Switzerland, on June 24 as part of the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay. The torch relay is going to culminate tomorrow at the Panathenian Stadium in Athens for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Sharing his experiences with mediapersons here today, Mr Puneet said it was a big honour for him and he felt on cloud nine. There were 105 persons who carried the Olympic Torch in Switzerland, hailing from different countries and I was the only Indian amongst them, he said.

Settled in the USA, Mr Puneet had come to India for attending the marriage of his sister. He said that the objective of Athens 2004 Torch Relay was to light the universal values of the Olympic Games and to touch people's hearts.

Puneet was brought up in Ludhiana and studied at Kundan Vidya Mandir School Ludhiana and at IIT-Delhi.He later joined Schlumberger, renowned oil company, as an IT consultant in Texas, USA, and worked with the company in several countries. He was chosen for this honour by the US company from the 50,000 employees of his company.

The parents of this brilliant boy, Mr Suresh Gupta and Ms Mala Gupta, said that they had never thought of such an honour for their family. The God is really great, they said with smiles.

Puneet is actively associated with the Houston Chapter-Association for India's Development, an NGO involved in developmental activates and fund- raising for India.

He is also the vice-president of a club Toastmaster, which is helping in developing leadership and public speaking skills.
