The 58th Independence Day of the country was celebrated with fervour in the district. The administration, government departments, colleges, schools, private organisations, political parties and shopkeepers etc. organised functions to mark the day.

Cong celebrates with abandoned kids
Ludhiana, August 15
The District Congress Committee organised the Independence Day function at Bal Bhavan here today. Hundreds of children, including some physically challenged, and a number of party workers attended the function.

City awash with Tricolour
Ludhiana, August 15
Various schools, colleges, organisations today celebrated the Independence Day. The whole city was awash with the three colours of the Tricolour. The Independence Day celebrations were held at BCM Model Senior Secondary School. The school also observed the day as 'topper’s day' to congratulate and honour various toppers.

Celebrations at CMCH, IGNOU centre
Ludhiana, August 15
The 57th anniversary of India’s Independence was celebrated with vigour and patriotism at Christian Medical College and Hospital here today. The celebrations were organised by Dental College, medical college and college of nursing. Mr D.Choudhary, Superintending Engineer, PSEB, was the chief guest.

Mr Malkit Singh Birmi, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, urged the people to strengthen the national unity and preserve the independence attained after sacrifices by thousands of countrymen.


Family celebrates boy’s escape from clutches of kidnappers
Ludhiana, August 15
The Independence Day could not have brought more cheer for the family of a retired horticulturist in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Block-G here, when after two nerve -wrecking days, the members finally had the glimpse of their 17-year-old boy kidnapped for a ransom of Rs 50 lakh (Rs 30 lakh according to the family) on Friday morning.

Fee for late entry of births goes
Ludhiana, August 15
The state government has exempted fee for late entry in birth registers under Rule 10 of the Punjab Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2004. According to officials of the Directorate of Census Operations, this has been done as part of various measures to successfully implement the second phase of the national campaign to issue birth certificates which is underway.

There appears to be no end in sight to the grievances of the late Beant Singh's family against the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh. The family which is nursing a grudge against the Chief Minister for dropping Mr Tej Parkash during the downsizing of the Cabinet, appears to be in no mood to reconcile as was evident today during the Shaheedi Conference here today.

Isolated rainfall expected in Punjab
Ludhiana, August 15
Widespread rainfall in Punjab on August 2 and 3 as a result of interaction between western disturbances over Jammu and Kashmir and monsoon easterlies provided some relief to the kharif crops following the deficient rainfall in July.

Three booked on assault charges
Ludhiana, August 15
The Division No 7 police yesterday registered a case under Sections 341, 323, 506 and 34 of the IPC on the statement of Mr Ranjit Singh, a resident of Khassi Khurd village, against Rurh Singh, Satnam Singh and Rajinder Singh, all residents of the same village.

Ludhiana, August 15
Gazal singer Pankaj Udhas enthralled residents of the city with his all-time favourite compositions at a function held here last night. Udhas who completes 25 years of singing next year said he was working on two albums due to be released before the year-end.
