Women’s relay team finishes seventh

Athens, August 28
In the absence of national one-lap record holder Manjit Kaur, India came up with a pathetic show to finish a distant seventh in the women’s 4x400m relay final at the Olympic Games here tonight.

The USA were runaway winners clocking 3 minutes, 19.01 seconds ahead of Russia (3:20.16) and Jamaica (3:22.00) who won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The Indian quartet, making its first appearance in the final after the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, failed to improve their national record set yesterday and finished in 3:28.51 seconds to finish only ahead of hosts Greece, who were done in by a faulty baton exchange in the second lap.

The Indians were straightaway on the backfoot in the absence of Manjit Kaur, who ran a scorching anchor lap yesterday to propel India to the final. But Manjit surprisingly did not figure in the starting line-up and her place went to Andhra’s S. Geetha.

The Indian quartet comprised S. Geetha, K.M. Beenamol, Chitra K. Soman and Rajwinder Kaur. — PTI
