City powerlifter brings laurels

Ludhiana, September 19
Local powerlifter Pawandeep Singh has brought laurels to the nation by finishing runner-up in the World Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Pretoria, South Africa, from September 8 to 12.

Pawandeep Singh was felicitated by the Worldwide Health Club at a function held here today. Accompanied by his coach Baljit Singh Bobby, Pawandeep informed that in the 75-kg category, he, with an attempt of total 530 kg, bagged the second position. He lifted 140 kg in bench press, 195 kg in the squat, while 195 kg in the dead lift to secure the silver medal.

Punkit of Uttar Pradesh emerged the winner in this championship, while a contestant from Japan earned the third position.

Jagtar Singh Lotey (coach), Amarjit Biradi, Puneet Pal, Jimmy, Raju Birdi, Harry, Aman, Amardeep (coach) were among those who attended the felicitation function.

Gymnasium inaugurated

Jagraon, September 19
Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, inaugurated a gymnasium at the sports wing of L.R. DAV College, Jagraon.

Mr Sanjeev Kalra, DIG, Punjab, and Mr Rajiv Ahir, SSP, Jagraon, were present on the occasion.

Mr Dawar laid stress on the necessity of a sound physique for students to excel in academics and other fields. Mr Kalra advised the students to have purposeful diversions like regular exercise during their spare time.

The Principal, Dr Satish Kumar Sharma, exhorted the students to achieve distinction in sports.

Simrat, Manjit best in yoga

Simrat Kaur of Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, and Manjit Singh of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, were adjudged the best participants among the girls and boys’ sections, respectively, in the inaugural Punjab Technical University Inter-College Yoga Championship organised at the GNIMT, Model Town, Ludhiana, here today.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Ferozepore, in the boy’s section was declared overall champion, while in the girls’ section the honour was bagged by Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana.

Results: Boys (Individual position) Manjit Singh of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, 1; Ajay Kumar of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Ferozepore, 2; and Shashi Kumar of Saheed Bhagat Singh College, Ferozepore, 3.

Team championship: Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Ferozepore, 1; Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib 2; and Beant College of Engineering and Technology, Gurdaspur, 3.

Girls (Individual position) Simrat Kaur of Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, 1; Gauri Mehta of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Engineering College, Ferozepore, 2; and Jasdeep Kaur of Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana 3.

Team championship: Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, 1; Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, 2; and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Ferozepore, 3.
