St John’s defeat Baptist School by 103 runs

In the second quarterfinal of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament today the match was played between hosts St Johns High School and Baptist School, Chandigarh.

St John’s School won the toss and elected to bat. St John’s faced some earlier jolts when four batsmen were out at 16, but its innings was steadied by some fine batting of Vikram Talwar (28), Ayush Raj Soni (33) and Vishal Jatta (20). St John’s scored 134 all out in 23 overs.

Chasing this modest total, Chandigarh Baptish School were all out at the score of 31 in 15 overs. Akshat took five wickets for 5 runs and leg spinner Manan took 4 wickets for 7 runs. St John’s High School won by 103 runs.

Sports festival

The Minerva Academy Football Club started its campaign with a bang, pumping in 13 goals in its first two league matches in the first Lt Col I.S. Deol Memorial Football League 2004.

In the first match of the day, Minerva Academy outplayed the Young Football Club and won by comfortable 7 goals. They were leading by 3 goals to 1 at the breather. Gurminder Singh scored 2 goals for the academy. In the second match, the Sanjay Football Club defeated the Golden Football Club, 2-0. Ajay scored both goals for the winners.

The Young Football Club got a walkover from the AG Haryana. The Coaching Centre, Sector 17, defeated Sanjay Football Club by 3-1.

In the last match of the Minerva Academy thrashed Golden Football Club 6-1.

Gurminder Singh scored a hat-trick for the winners. They led 3-1 at the lemon break. With these two wins Minerva Academy tops the league.

Carver memorial

St Stephen’s School “A” beat GMSSS 32 by 121 run in the Molly Carver Memorial Sport’s Carnival here today.

Score: St Stephen’s ‘A’ - 211 for 2 in 25 overs (Saurabh 85 n.o., Tarlok Sangha 45, Sukhpal 43 n.o., Kanishth 2 for 15) GMSSS - 91 all out in 21.4 overs (Rakesh 27).

In the second match, Bhavan Vidyalaya ‘B’ lost to St Stephen’s School ‘B’ by 8 runs (Scores: St Stephen’s School ‘B’ - 124 for 7 in 25 overs (Gaurav Puri 65, Vivek 22, Sahib 4 for 20, Gautam 2 for 31); Bhavan Vidyalaya‘B’ 116 all out in 23.4 overs (Pranav K 23, Pranav M 24, Arjun 2 for 16 Sajan 2 for 8).

Swimming association

The Chandigarh Swimming Association has decided to conduct the 16th Chandigarh Open Swimming Championship for sub-juniors, juniors and seniors boys and girls at the Panjab University swimming pool on November 7.

Chandigarh cricket team

The following have been selected for the under-16 School National Cricket Tournament that is being held at Sirsa from November 4 : Amit Prasher (Capt), Sahil Kapoor, Gitanshu, Harjot Singh, Japneet Singh, Navtej, Gurpreet, Vinod Abheshek Ghair, Vaibhav Narang (vice-captain), Rohit Kaushik (wicketkeeper), Parveen Kajle, Suyash, Pankaj, Vikrant Bansal and Amit Rana.

Selection trials

The Sports Department, Chandigarh, will conduct selection trials in connection with the formation of Chandigarh women team for participation in the National Sports Festival for Women (Group-1) to be held at Ludhiana from November 17 in basketball and gymnastic. The trials for basketball will be held at Sports Complex-7 on November 3 at 3 p.m. and gymnastics at Sports Complex-7 on November 5 at 3 p.m.

Emily basketball tourney

St Xavier Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here is organising the Emily Memorial Basketball Tournament from today. Twelve schools are participating in this tournament. In the opening day in boys category St Stephen’s beat St Anne’s 41-36 NPS-18 beat Bhavan Vidyalya 45-25 in girls; St Anne’s beat YPS, Mohali 30-14; St Kabir beat Shishu Niketan 26-7.

Basketball championship

Punjabi University, Patiala, won the North Zone Inter-University Basketball (Men) Championship for 2004-05. Panjab University, Chandigarh, Delhi University and Kurukshetra University got second, third and fourth positions.

Results of the matches played today are:- Punjabi University beat Panjab University, 80-78; Delhi University beat Kurukshetra University, 88-73.
