Drug deaddiction camp organised

Chandigarh, December 7
A drug deaddiction awareness camp was organised by the Drug Deaddiction and Treatment Centre, Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER, today at Padiala village in Kharar under the guidance of Prof P Kulhara, Head of the Department.

The camp was organised as part of the community programme of the DDTC, PGIMER, to increase the awareness regarding treatment of problems related to drugs and alcohol. A team comprising Dr Basant Pradhan, Dr Partha S. Biswas, Mr Om Prakash Giri and Ms Seema attended to the patients.

As many as 40 patients, mainly with an alcohol or opium problem, were examined and medicines prescribed. The camp was possible on account of the active cooperation provided by the village panchayat. TNS

East Zone defeat NEF in hockey

Chandigarh, December 7
East Zone defeated NEF Zone by 3-2 on the third day of the 35th All-India FCI Inter-Zonal Hockey Tournament being played at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium, today.

For East Zone, Bhim Kumar, Surin Cored and Sushir Minz scored one goal each. N. Ranjeet Mittee and Thoiba Singh scored one goal each for the NEF. Though the NEF squad made a couple of good moves, they could not sustain the pressure of the East Zone team in the dying minutes and lost the match.

Kulajeet Mittee, who represented the NEF Zone and also a former international player also could not convert the penalty stroke. East Zone won by 3-2.

In the second league match of the day, West Zone could not prevail upon their opponents South Zone and lost the match by 3-4.

South Zone had a good start and during the first half of the match, it had taken a lead of two goals scored by M. Chindaneem and Joneson, who made no mistake in converting the penalty corner stroke.

During the second half, South Zone took a lead of two field goals more, scored by L. Bhasker and M. Chindaneem. West Zone came with an aggressive approach and reduced the margin by scoring three goals. Vinod scored two field goals and Vishal Pillay converted the penalty corner stroke. But the match was decided in favour of South Zone by 4-3.

Tomorrow’s fixtures:

First semi-final: North Zone v/s South Zone at 12 noon

Second semi-final: Headquarters v/s East Zone at 2 pm.

Pinjore DPS skaters win medals

Chandigarh, December 7
Skaters of Delhi Public School, Pinjore, cornered glory by winning six gold medals, five silver medals and three bronze medals in the recently concluded Panchkula District Roller Skating Championship, which was organised by the Roller Skating Association, Panchkula.

Mr Samson Masih, Principal of the school, appreciated the achievement. Nikshubha Sharma bagged a gold medal, a silver medal in rink race I and II in 10-12 years age group.

The medal winners in boys section are: Inderjeet Singh (two gold medals 10-12 age group); Maanas Ahuja (one gold medal 10-12 age group); Sarmeet Singh (gold medal 14-16 age group); Aditya Vardhan Garg (two silver medals 10-12 age group); Anuj Kampani (one silver medal, two bronze medals 10-12 age group), Ishant Kohli (two bronze medals 8-10 age group) and Saransh Chaudhary (one bronze medal 10-12 age group).

Indoor games held

Swami Vivekanand Group of Institutes, Banur, Chandigarh, organised a three-day Inter-college indoor games competition at Banur near here. The students of Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET), Swami Vivekanand College of Pharmacy (SVCP), Swami Vivekanand College of Education (SVCE) and Swami Vivekanand Institute of Mass Communication (SVIMC) participated in indoor games like chess, carrom, sudoku and table tennis.

Mr K.K. Sawhney, past multiple council chairman of the Lions Club, was the chief guest on the concluding day, while Mr K.S. Sandhu and Mr R.K.Rana (Vice District Governor) were guests of honour.

Mr Manmohan Garg, CEO of the Banur-based institute, encouraged the students to take part in sports activities.

Awijit, Gaurav steer win in cricket tourney

Chandigarh, December 7
A superb batting performance by Awijit (100) and Gaurav (97) enabled DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, team to beat Guru Nanak School, Sector 36, by 30 runs in the finals of the UT Chandigarh inter-school under-19 cricket match held at the DAV school here, today.

In the limited 25 overs, DAV team failed to get off to a good start and were tottering at 25 runs only in 6 overs. The team finally managed to pile up 202 runs by losing 3 wickets. Guru Nanak team while chasing the target were bundled out for 172 in 24.3 overs.

Rahul and Sukhpal contributed 29 and 27 runs, respectively, and Amrinder took 2 wickets for 23. The bowling performance of DAV team was Vishal Dev 5-0-16-3, Mukesh 5-0-40-4 and Sandeep 3-0-12-2.
