Restore the dignity of B. Ed degree

In her article “B.Ed loses way”, Ambika Sharma has exposed all the claims about qualitative improvement in the B.Ed system. The quality of teachers has not improved at all. Clearly, the whole process of teachers’ training raises disturbing questions in the context of mushrooming growth of training colleges, as enlisted by the writer.

The NCTE has created more confusion about the B.Ed colleges in Jammu and Kashmir which are not recognised, implying that these graduates are barred from job prospects in the country. The Union Human Resource Development Ministry should rectify this promptly.

The NCTE should be directed to modify its Charter which says that only those graduates coming out from the colleges in the NCTE’s list are eligible for employment in the country. The graduates of Jammu University and Kashmir University should also be included in the NCTE’s list of recognised colleges. Above all, there is a need to restore the dignity of the B. Ed degree.

The trends unleashed by globalisation have caused dying up of the traditional avenues of employment. This, in turn, has triggered a mad scramble for seats/jobs in non-conventional and newly emerging areas largely revolving around software/hardware technology, biotechnology, fashion, event management, hotel, tourism etc.

The writer rightly said that the Himachal government cannot turn a blind eye to this hoax, loot and exploitation of the gullible youth and their poor, harassed parents — be it primary, secondary/higher or technical education. It must not only keep a check on these institutes but also bring the guilty managers to book so that they cannot wreck havoc with the careers and lives of the youth of this region.



The article aptly highlights that B.Ed is being pursued blindly by many youth to get easy jobs or enhance matrimonial status without any definite career objective. Secondly, the avarice of the mushrooming private institutions has also crippled the aim of the course i.e. churning out devoted and pragmatic teachers. This is sheer treachery with the noble profession. All this must be stopped.

The merit of the course and not the huge amount of fee be given due weightage. The government should not allow these colleges in the private sector. This will put an end to frustration among trained teachers.

What ails English teaching?

There is a general impression that the quality of teaching English in Punjab government schools is very poor. In these schools, English has been introduced at the primary level, but the output is unsatisfactory. Primary schools have no subject teachers. One teacher teaches all the subjects of a class including English. English is being taught without English teachers.

In the middle and higher classes, the situation is pitiful. At matric level, there are separate teachers for teaching Hindi, Punjabi, Mathematics, Science etc., but there is no separate teacher for English. There is even no post of English master/mistress in master cadre.

Teachers of Social Studies teach English in addition to their own subject. Among them a number of teachers have not studied English elective/ literature in BA. In such circumstances, how can we expect effective teaching in English?


Need for IJS

The Government of India should immediately take measures to introduce Indian Judicial Service (IJS) on the lines of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). As the judges will be recruited to the IJS under the Union Public Service Commission on a regular basis, the problem of filling vacancies in the courts will be solved once and for all in the country.

The quality of the Bar too will improve as advocates will hone their skills for recruitment to the IJS. The IJS officers will also enjoy time-scale career progression and rise like IAS, IPS and IFS officers.



The judges at the district and lower courts in the states are selected by the respective state public service commissions. Only those having the requisite eligibility and merit in the civil services (judicial) examination are interviewed and appointed as judges.

However, the judges for the High Courts and the Supreme Court are merely elevated from the Bar. The President, the Union Law Minister and the Chief Justice of India should evolve a proper transparent and democratic procedure to appoint judges to the higher courts.

Not in good taste

Bangalore will become Bangalooru, Mangalore Mangalooru and Mysore Mysooru. Kannadigas are very proud people and think high of themselves. They are so in the field of fine arts. Language is always a means to communicate. Regionalisation won’t make it better. It may be enriching the language in certain ways, but too much sugar can be injurious to health.

Following the policy of Kannadisation, what will happen if we Punjabitised Mohali to Mohala, Delhi to Delha, Chandigarh as Chandigarha, Ropar as Ropran and so on? Let the rose be rose in English, gulab in Hindi and roja in south, but not gulabaa in Hindi and roju in south. Or to put it in another way, pyar ko pyar hi rehne do, koi naam na do.


NRIs’ ways

I would like to refer to the news-item, “Wife-deserting: NRIs may be booked for rape” (May 21, 2005) and the Internet question, “Should the government have special cells to prosecute NRIs who desert their wives?” (August 12, 2003). Surprisingly, the government has not done anything in the matter despite several reminders to the Prime Minister’s Office and the National Commission for Women. We need an effective law to deal firmly with such NRIs.
