Blackworm hits 80,000 computers in India

New Delhi, February 3
Computer virus Blackworm and its variants ravaged more than 80,000 computers across the country through its mailing worm Nymex that cut a swathe through the Microsoft Windows operating system.

The virus with names like Blacmal, My Wife, Kamasutra and its variants has hit more than 80,000 computers in the country by this afternoon and a million across the globe. The virus is known to strike on the third of every month. The worm infects systems using Windows operating systems and can corrupt all documents with the file formats like. dmp, :Ddoc,:E.md:CPTIS-.MD:K.

The Indian Computer Emergence Response Team (CERT) of the Department of Information Technology had sent out an advisory to 800 organisations on January 23 to protect their computer systems against the worm.

The worm is programmed to overwrite or corrupt Microsoft Windows Office documents, Word documents, Excel spread sheets, and PDF files.

The worm will not affect machines running on different operating systems such as Mac OS. UNI
