Knitting contest
: The Vajra Army Wives’ Welfare Association organised ‘Aao Bun eek behtar kal’, a knitting contest for the wives of army jawans, here on Wednesday. Over 350 ladies participated in the contest organised in association with Vardhman Spinning and General Mills Ltd. The contest lasted for two hours during which ladies knitted patterns of caps, socks, miniature purses and bags. Ms Sneh Prabha Rajawat, President, Vajra AWWA, was the chief guest on the occasion. She gave prizes to the three best designers and 15 consolation prizes. The three winners were Ms Murti Devi, wife of Subedar Daljit Singh, Ms Bina Thakur, wife of N.K. Thakur, and Ms Parmila, wife of Havildar R.B. Sah.

: A three-day Civil Services Preparation Orientation camp under the guidance of ‘Samkalp’, a New Delhi-based NGO, concluded at the local Hindu Kanya College here on Wednesday. Mr Santosh Taneja and Colonel Ashok Gautam, the experts from ‘Samkalp’, encouraged the students to join the Civil Services. Mr Taneja announced that the regular coaching classes would be started very soon on the college premises for the aspirants from the region.

Award: The folk singer, Sarabjeet Cheema, will be awarded the Hamdard Award for his song “Na maree na maree nee ma…eh na kehar gujari nee maa”, highlighting the menace of female foeticide. The award would be given at Virsa Vihar here on February 24. This was disclosed by Bikramjit Bikki, general secretary of the Punjabi Sabhyacharak Pidh, Kapurthala. The Pidh is organising competitions in folk arts and “Punjaban Mutiyar” also. Last year, Gurmeet Bawa was given the award. The function was being organised by the ‘Sabhyacarak Pidh’ to make the modern generation aware about its culture and to promote folk singers working to create awareness about social issues, he added.



Body found
: Body of a youth bearing multiple injuries marks was recovered by the police from a drain near the Rezangla War Memorial at Dharuhera chowk here on Tuesday. A sharp-edged weapon was used by the assailants. The body has been identified as that of Navin Kumar (32), a resident of Phideri village near here. The deceased, who was a parcel clerk at Delhi Sarai Rohilla station had not been reportedly attending office for the past several days. The police has registered a case under Sections 302, 201, 34 of he IPC.

Molestation charge
: A woman of Saraswati Nagar here on Tuesday lodged a complaint against Parveen of the same colony with the Mahila police station alleging that the youth had made an attempt to molest her.

Held for murder, rape: Kuldeep (22) alias, Beena of Kailana village, was arrested on Tuesday for kidnapping and murder of a 12-year-old Dalit girl of the same village last Saturday. He has confessed before the police that he had kidnapped the girl and raped her before he murdered her. 

Wife assaulted: Ramesh of Mandura village was arrested on the charge of assaulting and beating up his wife in the house of in-laws in Adarsh Nagar on Tuesday.

Arrested: Rampal Kashyap was arrested for the alleged kidnapping and murder of Mr Ramesh Jain, president of the Ganaur Beopar Mandal and owner of the Vardhman Rice Mills Ganaur on the night of December 25 last year. The other accused Pawan Tyagi , Sonu, Dharminder, Titoo and Surinder had been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

Killed: Sandeep (24) of Ram Nagar here was killed when hit by an unknown vehicle on the G T Road near Rasoi village about 15 km from here on Tuesday. The police has registered the case against the driver who escaped . In another accident, Bhupinder Singh and his wife Jameelao were seriously injured when their car was hit by an unknown vehicle on the G T Road near Rai police station about 13 km from here on Tuesday. The police has registered a case.
