BJP suspends Khurana

New Delhi, March 19
Former Delhi Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana was today suspended from the primary membership of the party hours after he announced his plans to attend expelled party leader Uma Bharati’s March 21 rally here. A BJP spokesman said that party President Rajnath Singh took the decision to suspend Mr Khurana for his “anti-party activities.”

A letter, signed by party Vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, informing Mr Khurana of his suspension has been sent to the former Union Minister. The spokesman said that further action will follow after Mr Rajnath Singh and other senior office-bearers return to the Capital.

Mr Khurana had said earlier today that he would take part in expelled party leader Uma Bharti’s Janadesh Rally in the Capital on Tuesday to raise his voice for the people of Delhi.

Maintaining that he had not been adequately backed by the party in his campaign against demolitions, Mr Khurana said he would organise demonstrations against the demolition drive.

Mr Khurana’s comments came in the wake of the BJP denying him a Rajya Sabha nomination which, he claims, was promised to him by former party chief Venkaiah Naidu.

The BJP leader is also apparently peeved at the party denying him key organisational responsibilities.

Mr Khurana’s suspension is being seen as a warning to the party rank and file ahead of Ms Bharti’s rally that attending it would be treated as an act of indiscipline.

Mr Khurana was briefly suspended from the BJP last year for his outburst against the then party chief Mr L.K. Advani. However, following intervention of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and after expressing regrets for his statement against Mr Advani, he was brought back but was not given any major responsibility.
