CRPF CAMP: A doll making and soft toy making training camp was organised at Group Centre, CRPF, Jalandhar, under the guidance of Mr M.S. Ahmed Ali, Additional DIGP, on Monday. Wife of the officer, Ms Farzana Ali, and Dr S.K. Dhillon, Chief Medical Officer, expressed their views to the participants, who also included wives of officers. The camp was organised with the help of Multi-trade and Integrated Institution, Muktsar.

MEETING: The annual meeting of the Punjab State Warehousing Field Employees’ Union was held here on Monday during which the delegates decided to unanimously elect Mr Akshar Kumar as president of the body for up to 2008. The members demanded that one-step promotion of all categories be given, as done in case of Class IV employees, many of whom allegedly did not fulfill any required qualification fixed by the government.

BANDH BY SHOPKEEPERS: Shopkeepers of the Ali Mohalla market on Tuesday organised a bandh in protest against the alleged attempts to extort money from the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers alleged extortion attempts by a youth living in the area. The SP City (I), Dr Surinder Kumar Kalia, confirmed that the youth had attempted to extort money from the shopkeepers. However, he added that such an incident had happened for the first time in the city.

CASH LOOTED: Cash amounting to Rs 12,000 was looted from the residence of one Anup Kumar from Guru Amardas Nagar. The family had gone to Amritsar when a relative of theirs informed them that thieves had entered the house, but ran away when neighbours raised an alarm.

KAPURTHALA
ATTACK CONDEMNED: The District Bar Association has condemned the attack on Additional Sessions Judge at Barnala by some “anti-social elements”, in a meeting held here on Tuesday. Mr Bua Jee Sansi, PCS, Additional Sessions Judge, Barnala, was attacked and injured seriously by two youths on Saturday. Demanding immediate action against the culprits, the association expressed its concern over the security of judicial officials as well as advocates and the general public.

Rally organised
: The International Democratic Party (IDP) on Monday organised a rally on the arrival of the Hussainiwala Chandigarh Social Security and Social Justice March commemorating the 75th martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, at Thuhi village. Addressing the gathering Gurdarshan Singh Khatra, IDP state secretary, criticised the present model of corporate development and demanded employment guarantee for the unemployed.

Cheques distributed
: Mr Parkash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, distributed cheques amounting of Rs 62.95 lakh among 117 government schools for the development of infrastructure under the Sarv Shikshiya Abhiyan, at a function organised at Government Senior Secondary School on Monday. Mr Gurmail Singh Sahlon, District Education Officer, presided over the function, informed Mr Amrik Singh, District Project Coordinator, Sarv Shikhiya Abhiyan.

Degrees awarded: R.K. Arya College organised its annual convocation-cum-prize distribution function here on Sunday. Dr R.S. Bawa, Registrar, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was the chief guest and Mr Prem Bhardwaj, president, college managing committee, presided over. Dr R.S. Bawa, conferred degrees on 141 students. He also awarded trophies and certificates to more than 100 students, who have excelled in academic, sports and cultural activities.

Inaugurated: Mr Parkash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, inaugurated the newly set-up office at the Sub Registrar at the District Administrative Complex, here on Monday. The infrastructure facilities on par with the international standards have been made available at the Sub Registrars office for the convenience of people. He also distributed cheques amounting to Rs 46.50 lakh among 17 panchayats for carrying out various development works.

Seminar on homoeopathy
: To celebrate the birthday of Dr Hahnemann, founder of homoeopathy, a two-day educational seminar on homoeopathy is being organised by the Association for Scientific Research in Homoeopathy from April 2 at NIS, Patiala. Dr Amar singh D. Nikkam, a renowned figure in the field of homoeopathy from Pune, will deliver lectures with his team of doctors.

Bansal is SDIC chief: Mr Jagdish Bansal has been elected president of the Sangrur District Industrial Chamber (SDIC) at a meeting held under the presidentship of Mr Vijay Gupta, a local industrialist, here. Besides this, Mr Balwinder Jindal was elected president of the Sangrur block of the SDIC.

Free eye camp
: As many as 700 patients were examined at a free eye-camp organised by the Citizen Council with the help of District Blindness Control Society here on Monday. A team of six doctors examined the patients.

Rewari
Woman shot at
: A young woman, Renu, was shot at by an assailant at her residence in Mohalla Kayasthwara here on Sunday night. The assailant, who had allegedly been hired for this purpose by Omvati, wife of Naresh Kumar, fled. On Renu’s statement the police has registered a case of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy against the accused.

Wife set on fire: A young man, Satish Kumar, allegedly sprinkled kerosene on his wife, Usha (32) and set her on her fire at Chillhar village, near here, on Sunday night. Usha was admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The Rohrai police has arrested Satish Kumar.
