JALANDHAR MEETING: The annual meeting of the Punjab State Warehousing Field Employees’ Union was held here on Monday during which the delegates decided to unanimously elect Mr Akshar Kumar as president of the body for up to 2008. The members demanded that one-step promotion of all categories be given, as done in case of Class IV employees, many of whom allegedly did not fulfill any required qualification fixed by the government. BANDH BY SHOPKEEPERS: Shopkeepers of the Ali Mohalla market on Tuesday organised a bandh in protest against the alleged attempts to extort money from the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers alleged extortion attempts by a youth living in the area. The SP City (I), Dr Surinder Kumar Kalia, confirmed that the youth had attempted to extort money from the shopkeepers. However, he added that such an incident had happened for the first time in the city. CASH LOOTED: Cash amounting to Rs 12,000 was looted from the residence of one Anup Kumar from Guru Amardas Nagar. The family had gone to Amritsar when a relative of theirs informed them that thieves had entered the house, but ran away when neighbours raised an alarm. KAPURTHALA NABHA NAWANSHAHR Degrees awarded: R.K. Arya College organised its annual convocation-cum-prize distribution function here on Sunday. Dr R.S. Bawa, Registrar, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was the chief guest and Mr Prem Bhardwaj, president, college managing committee, presided over. Dr R.S. Bawa, conferred degrees on 141 students. He also awarded trophies and certificates to more than 100 students, who have excelled in academic, sports and cultural activities. Inaugurated: Mr Parkash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, inaugurated the newly set-up office at the Sub Registrar at the District Administrative Complex, here on Monday. The infrastructure facilities on par with the international standards have been made available at the Sub Registrars office for the convenience of people. He also distributed cheques amounting to Rs 46.50 lakh among 17 panchayats for carrying out various development works. SANGRUR Bansal is SDIC chief: Mr Jagdish Bansal has been elected president of the Sangrur District Industrial Chamber (SDIC) at a meeting held under the presidentship of Mr Vijay Gupta, a local industrialist, here.
