Grid inauguration
: The Rural Development and Power Minister Lal Singh will inaugurate a power grid on May 20 at Hargana village near here. The power grid was allotted to Kheri Naudh Singh village but due to tussle between panchayat members, it was transferred to Hargana village.

Staff shortage: Traders, migrant labourers and other people are suffering a lot due to the staff shortage at the State bank of India, Khamano branch. The Manager of the branch, when contacted, admitted that there was a shortage of staff.

charge Taken: Mr A.K. Garg has taken over as General Manager (Network 2), State Bank of India, Chandigarh Circle.

Invited: The Bureau of Indian Standards has invited entries for the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Awards - 2006. These awards instituted in 1991, are given annually to generate interest and involvement of Indian industry in qulality programmes, drive the BIS products and services to higher levels of quality so as to effectively meet the challenges of domestic and international markets.

Seminar: The Akhil Bhartiya Bishnoi Mahasabha will organise a international-level seminar on World Environment Day at Sri Guru Jambeshwar Sansthan Bhavan, Delhi, on June 5. Environmentalists and scientists from different countries are expected to participate in the seminar. The preachings of Guru Jambeshwar, regarding saving the environment and maintaining the earth’s green cover, will be highlighted in the seminar.

Elected: Mr Yashwant Singh has been elected president of the CITCO Workers Union, according to a press note.

MEETING: The National Safai Karamchari Commission will hear the grievances of safai karamcharis at Pinjore on May 17. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Brijendra Singh, said the meeting would be chaired by the chairperson of the commission, Ms Santosh Chaudhary.

SHAGUN LOANS DISBURSED: The District Welfare Department has disbursed Rs 17.40 lakh to 116 beneficiaries under the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Vivah Yojana, an official press release stated. While 97 of the beneficiaries had been granted Rs 5100 each before the scheme was launched, they have now been given Rs 9.06 lakh as arrears. Last year, 252 beneficiaries were given Rs 24.33 lakh under this scheme.


19 arrested: Nineteen persons, including the owner of a Jagadhri-based hotel, have been arrested for allegedly consuming and serving liquor at an unauthorised place after a raid on the hotel on Thursday evening. They were arrested under various sections of the Excise Act.


Land registration system: Deputy Commissioner Manish Garg inaugurated the Computer Land Registration System for Bilaspur sadar tehsil at the District Collectorate here. He said now all land sales and purchases would be computerised and documents would be issued on the spot.

Labourer killed in accident
: A migrant labourer was killed after he was hit by a vehicle near Barotiwala on Saturday evening. He hailed from Bihar. He worked with a contractor. The vehicle driver fled from the spot after hitting Kishori. His identification could not be confirmed yet. A case has been registered.

Seminar on French: A two-day national seminar on French language, being organised by the Department of Foreign Languages was inaugurated at Himachal Pradesh University here recently. Inaugurating the seminar the Governor, Mr VS Kokje, lauded the joint efforts of HPU and the Association of Indian Teachers of French and the French Embassy in organising a national-level seminar. The keynote address was delivered by Monsieur Pierre Koest from the Embassy of France.
