Having fun and learning new skills
While blistering heat wave continues to sweep across the region, forcing residents to stay indoors, the girl students of Government Secondary School, Maloo Nangal, nearly 10 km from Amritsar, can be seen playing gatka, a Sikh martial art, and boys performing bhangra. The students take part in different activities like physical fitness, martial arts during a month-long summer camp. The day starts with medication at 6.30 A.M. and ends with a grammar class. Interestingly, out of 80, at least 50 girls regularly attend the camp. Even as the teachers of other government schools are enjoying summer vacations, the staff of this school specially come from far off places to organise free camp, sponsored by the Sikhi Sikhya Gur Vichar Foundation, Amritsar. They are assisted by senior professors, doctors and playwrights who reach the remote village at their own expenses. This is the fifth camp being organised by the students of the school. Earlier, the camp used to be organised by the Parent-Teacher Association with active support of the village panchayat. Students take lessons in yoga, meditation and martial arts, including gatka, judo and karate. The school arranges special lectures by eminent persons who deliver speeches on personality development without charging even a single penny. This is a unique venture, which is instrumental in opening window to the border students Besides, they are trained in folk songs, patriotic songs, bhangra, plays, declamation contests and general knowledge. Mr Sukhdev Singh Sandhawalia, a Punjabi teacher and state awardee, and his wife, Ms Parmjit Kaur Sandhawalia, a teacher of an SGPC-run school, who are the moving spirit behind the camp, said to sensitise the students about the deteriorating environment, experts delivere lectures on various topics. The students are also taught gardening. The charts on various subjects like menace of AIDS, drugs and other social evils are prepared by the students. An exhibition of the items and work done by the students during this period is also held. The matric and plus-two results of the school are excellent in the region. The middle class result is 100 per cent. The students have made the school proud in curricular activities, too. It is a healthy sign that girls outnumbered boys in the camp. It is an attempt to end gender disparity that otherwise manifests itself in various forms. “It is all due to the progressive nature of village panchayat and the parents who send their daughters to attend the summer vacation camp,” says Ms Rajwinder Kaur, a teacher. Recently, a one-act play, Kanjak, jointly directed by Gulshan Kumar and Pritpal Pali, was staged at a function. The story showcases the underlying causes of gender inequality and the menace of drug addiction. The hilarious Punjabi play and melodramatic tenor enthralled the audience. Maj-Gen D. D. Singh (retd), Principal, Dr Bhajan Singh Lark, Principal, Baba Kumma Singh Engineering College, Gurusar Satlani, Dr Harkanwaljit Singh, Prof S. S. Chahal, Kulwant Singh Gill, an artiste, Dr Sawinder Singh, Prof Navtej Singh, Dr Suba Singh and Prof Gurbax Singh from Khalsa College, Gurpreet Singh and Baljit Singh, Manager, Punjab National Bank, delivered lectures during the summer camp. The Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa, promised the children that he would ensure regular power supply to the school. He appreciated the efforts of the village panchayat and the school staff for this venture. |
Quiz to develop green minds Students of Classes VIII to X, with a sensitive mind on ecological issues, have a chance to prove their mettle and get international recognition by participating in the eighth Green Olympiad on September 2. The New Delhi-based Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is organising the event in association with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Hero Honda. It will offer students an opportunity to widen their horizon on environmental issues and develop love for nature. It will also give chance to the green minds to interact with their contemporaries from other countries, including the UAE, Russia, Singapore and Nepal. For the test, no formal education at the school level is required. Those who are keen observers and analysts, have love towards plants, animals and creatures and want to conserve resources for posterity can surely make a mark. The students can also take the help of TERI question banks. A school can register a minimum of 10 students for the Olympiad. The country is divided into four zones. Seven top performing teams from each zone in the Olympiad will qualify for TerraQuiz that will be broadcast on Doordarshan’s National Channel. The finalists—Hero Honda Environment Ambassadors—will receive Rs 25,000 each, while the participants will get a certificate from the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The ambassadors will undertake initiatives to spread awareness on environmental issues in the school. Last year, over 60,000 students from 1,000 schools participated in the exam that was held in 402 cities and towns across India and abroad. Says Dr Subhash Gupta, Senior Scientific Officer, Himachal State Council for Science and Technology, Shimla: “This year, students from Himachal Pradesh are participating for the first time.” The last date for registration is July 15.
