Pramod Mahajanís key aide gets bail
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 7
Investigations into the Rahul Mahajan drug abuse case made further headway with the arrest of Harish Sharma, a key aide to the late BJP leader, Pramod Mahajan and his driver Ganesh on charges of destruction of evidence.

Sharma was arrested in the early hours of the morning after several rounds of questioning that began on Sunday for his alleged role in ordering cleaning up of the 7, Safdarjung Road residence of the late BJP leader where his son Rahul had organised a small party on Thursday night. Ganesh was taken into custody earlier in the day.

Later, both Harish Sharma and Ganesh, were granted bail. The bail was granted after they produced personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each and one surety of like amount at the Tughlaq Road police station here.

The two were granted bail as they were charged with destruction of evidence which is a bailable offence, a senior police official said.

The Police suspect that heroin and champagne were procured and consumed at the party attended by Mahajan's aide Moitra, Sahil Zaroo, who allegedly arranged for the drugs and three others - Trishay Khanna, Rahul Malhotra and Karan Ahuja, all scions of well connected, affluent business families of the Capital. Rahul took critically ill after the party while Moitra died on way to Apollo Hospital.

Sharma allegedly ordered the clean-up of the Mahajan residence of the vomit of Rahul and Moitra and also "disturbed the scene of the incident" by removing champagne bottles and washing glasses used for drinking champagne.

The Police said Sharma failed to give satisfactory replies to several questions put to him during interrogation at the Tughlak Road police station. He had tried to evade questioning by getting himself admitted to the Apollo Hospital complaining of high blood pressure.

A team of Delhi Police officials is also visiting Mumbai to check the antecedents of Rahul and Sahil who are also believed to be in the party circuit there.
