Endoscopic surgery for tumour comes off age
Our correspondent
Ludhiana, June 23
'Excruciating headaches, loss of smell perception, blurred vision, eye pain, protruding eyeballs, torrential nasal bleeds, nasal speech and nasal stuffiness, not necessarily in that order, may indicate a sinister pathology, warranting a visit to the specialist. Who knows you may be having a tumor, hidden deep in the crevices of your nose or the sinuses.'
According to Dr Daljit Singh,Principal, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), here the institution striving to serve the ailing mankind, has developed to a level of excellence, the field of minimal invasive surgery of tumors of the nose, sinuses and the head neck region, applied to resection of tumors of this region. He mentions with pride that Dr Manish Munjal, Professor of ENT Department, has to his credit a unique and exhaustive series of more than 50 cases of tumors of the nose and sinuses, tackled using the 'endoscope, with video documentation'. This presentation was acknowledged and appreciated by the ENT specialists at the CME of the Ear, Nose, Throat and Head Neck surgeons of this district recently. The series of tumors dealt with the endoscopic modality, included the youngest child of 6 months to the eldest of 72 years of age. Dr Manish Munjal emphasised that protruding and watering eyes, with or without accompanying pain, blurred vision or change in color perception or inability to look to one side might indicate obscure pathology in the domain of the ENT surgeon, extending to the eye region. "Nasal bleeds, nasal blockade, one sided nasal discharge, especially in the adolescents point towards a tumor of blood vessels usually and has to be operated upon." He said severe headaches, localised to the forehead, temples, back of the head or diffuse, may be due to sinus-nose disease or one that was creeping towards the brain. Loss of smell too required a thorough assessment. The tumors could be endoscopically diagnosed earlier, meticulously biopsied with precision, entirely cleared sometimes, and future treatment like radiation or chemotherapy, if required, could be better planned.
