Over 6,000 appear in UGC-NET exam

Chandigarh, June 25
More than 6,000 students appeared in the National Eligibility Test (NET), conducted by the University Grants Commission, here today.
Prof D.C. Kataria, an expert for the UGC-NET exam and Director of the Aryans Educational and Charitable Trust, said the students gave mixed reactions towards the papers, though a majority of them found the paper-I a bit tough.

Giving details about papers II and III of various subjects, Prof Kataria said students appearing for the subject of English found these papers easier as compared to the December-2005 test but management and commerce students found the paper III very lengthy.

The UGC conducts the NET for the humanities and social sciences stream twice a year.

Summer camp for children concludes

Chandigarh, June 25
A 15-day Airtel kids summer camp came to an end today. There was cultural display by children who had participated in the camp. The camp was organised by EuroKids. Airtel had sponsored children of its customers for the camp.

During the camp the children were made to participate in a series of activities, including pool splash, story reading, dance, art and craft, outdoor visits, magic show and the like.

At the grand finale today held at New Public School, Chandigarh, the atmosphere was fun-filled and lively.

The parents and grandparents of the children cheered and clapped, while tiny tots danced and swayed to the tune of “It's the time to disco…”. The kids in the age group of 6-12 years performed “Masti Ki Pathshala.” Participation certificates were then given to all kids by Airtel.

According to Mr Rajiv Jaitly, CEO (mobility), Bharti Airtel, Punjab Circle, said, “ The camp was an ideal platform for the kids to learn and it was extremely heartening to see them having a great time.”

Balraj Sahni award for Kanwar Iqbal

The 24th Balraj Sahni national award for the promotion of Indian classical and regional music was conferred on the city-based musicologist and composer, Prof. Kanwar Iqbal, Head, Music Department, Government College, Sector 46.

The award was presented by Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker Gangu Ram Musafir at a special function organised by Mumbai and Shimla-based All-India Artistes Association at the Kali Bari auditorium, Shimla, yesterday. Musafir lauded the efforts of Kanwar Iqbal for propagating the rich regional folklore in countries like Russia, Uzbekistan, the USA, Canada during his lecture demonstration series and performances.

Credited with musical score of 12 regional films, Doordarshan serials and annual new year eve programmes, Indo-Pak games opening and closing ceremonies, this Indore gharana maestro had worked as music director for Shropshire (UK), Punjab youth music exchange programme in 1999. Bollywood playback singers like Sukhwinder Singh, Jaspinder Narula, Vinod Sehgal, Wadali brothers, Gurdas Mann and others had recorded for various films and albums under his music direction.

An award had been also bestowed on a city poet Madhav Kaushik for his literary enterprise and proliferation of literature especially the ghazal. He had authored 14 books and also won the millennium poet award at the world hindi conference, Rajbhasha and Haryana Sahitya Akademy awards for his contribution in literature.

Dr Neera Gupta Dental surgeon honoured

Arjun’s ton powers Chandigarh win

A superb unbeaten century by Arjun Singh (110 n.o.) and fine batting from Amit Sonkar (31 n.o.) along with Rohit Singh (27 n.o.), enabled hosts Chandigarh to register a comprehensive victory over Karnal by 7 wickets in their last league match of the Haryana State Inter-District under 19 Cricket Championship organised by the Haryana Cricket Association at DAV Sector 8, here today.

Starting from the first inning’s reply to the overnight score of 106 for 3 against Karnal’s total of 247 all out, Chandigarh’s Arjun slammed the century and ensured vital 22 runs lead in the first innings, along with Amit Sonkar who executed superb drives square of the wicket in his short innings of 29 n.o. Chandigarh sport 269 for 4 in stipulated 60 overs of the first innings. Rohan was the only successfully for visitors having 2 wickets for 47 runs.

Karnal started their second inning with a deficit of 22 runs. Rohan 38 and Sumit Kundu 41 took the score to respectability after they were in a trouble with 3 wickets down for just 15 runs at the end of the fifth over. Visitors scored 165 for 8 in 40 overs. Angad Singh and Shagun accounted for two wickets a piece requiring 144 to win in 40 overs.

Chandigarh started confidently and scored the required runs in 32.2 overs registering a 7-wicket win. Gaurav Chabbra made 32, Amit Sonkar 31 n.o. and dependable Rohit Singh scored 27 n.o. facing 67 balls.

In the second match of the day, Kaithal is poised for victory against Ambala at St. Johns, Sector 26, cricket grounds with a 38-run first innings lead.

Kaithal, after wining the toss, put Ambala into bat first. Medium pacers Narinder and Parveen delivered a fine bowling spell putting Ambala at meagre 76 runs in 33.2 overs.

Harjot was the top scorer for Ambala with 21. Another batsman who could reach the double figures was Mohit with 11 runs. Narinder claimed 3 wicket for 9 runs, Parveen has 2 for 14 where as Shamsher claimed 2 wicket for 17 runs.

In reply, Kaithal scored 114 in 36.2 overs with the help of well-made 46 by Vipin Kumar. Although Sparsh and Harjit made a valiant effort to restrict the Kaithal batsman but that was not enough as Kaithal mustered a 38 runs valuable lead. Spinner Sparsh Jain claimed 6 wickets for 57 runs and Harjot Singh chipped in with 4 for 15.

Batting in the second innings, Ambala was again in trouble against the devastating fast bowling attack from Ayush, who was having an impressive bowling spell which read as 8-2-14-5. At draft stumps, Ambala was 29 for 7 in the second innings, still trailing by 9 runs to the first innings score.

National badminton from November 22

Panchkula, June 25
The Badminton Association of India has allotted Junior National Badminton Tournament to Haryana which will be held at Sports Complex, Sector 3, Panchkula, from November 22 to 30.

This was disclosed by Devender Singh, president of the Haryana Badminton Association (HBA) at the annual general body meeting of the HBA held in Sector 5, here today. It was anticipated that the total expenditure involved in holding this tournament would be more than Rs 25 lakh.

It was also announced that the Haryana State Junior Badminton Championship will be held at Gurgaon and the Haryana State Senior Badminton Championship is scheduled to be held at Bhiwani in September.

8-day yoga camp begins

Panchkula, June 25
A 8-day yoga camp organised by the Panchkula Residents Welfare Council began at Sector 12, here today. Wg Cdr H.L. Ratta (retired), member of the association, inaugurated the camp. He highlighted the importance of yoga. He also stressed on its importance at a time when people were facing mental and physical stress.

Mr S.D. Daid, general secretary of the council, said similar camps would also be organised in other sectors in association with the Bhartiya Yog Sansthan, and the Residents Welfare Associations of the respective sectors, shortly.

Mr C.D. Bhardwaj, president of local unit the sansthan, added that yoga not only helped in maintaining good health but also helped in curing many chronic diseases.

Harmail winner of special category swimming

Harmail was adjudged the winner under the special handicap category while Dishant Sehgal won the first place in 25 metres free style (boys) U- 10 category during the swimming competition organised by the Lake Sports Complex for its swimming pool users at its compound here today. Mr Inderjit Singh Sandhu, Director, Sports, UT, gave away prizes to the winners.
