Dabbawalas deliver lecture as well
Ramesh Kandula

Hyderabad: A single goof-up on their part would leave a customer hungry, and the famous dabbawalas (tiffin-box delivery boys) of Mumbai would not let that happen at any cost. It’s amazing how they do it and what motivates these illiterate and semi-literate workers to execute their job every working day with such precision.

The global managers of tomorrow at the Indian School of Business (ISB) received a lesson or two in network management without latest gadgets during an interactive session with the humble dabbawalas. The meeting was organised by the Centre for Global Logistics and Manufacturing Strategies; and the Energy, Manufacturing and Operations (EMO) Club of the class of 2007.

Raghunath Medge and Gagaram Talekar, president and secretary of the association of dabbawalas, respectively, spoke about the organisational structure, working style, and delivery systems of their organisation, the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers’ Association, to a packed weekend gathering of ISBians.

It is no small feat to unfailingly deliver nearly 2 lakh lunch boxes to office-goers and schoolchildren and bringing the empty boxes back to the base every single working day in the chaotic Mumbai traffic.

The 5,000-strong workforce may be largely illiterate or semi-literate, yet it ensures that the delivery performance remains robust to disruption in the distribution environment. What is more, it has been doing this consistently for the last 115 years without using information technology.

The network operates in a planned and precise way based on a zoning system that has several teams, each supervised by a mukadam. The city’s network of local trains is used in the delivery process and boxes are also carried on bicycles and carts. The dabbawalas also have to carry on their heads large wooden crates weighing 60-70 kg each.

For his effort, each dabbawala, who is also a shareholder in the organisation, earns Rs 5,000 per month on an average. Even though the association has begun dabba booking on SMS and the Internet, its aim remains to keep the operational cost low, as that has been its USP.

The dabbawalas have received recognition worldwide, especially after Prince Charles visited the Mumbai Chruchgate Station to interact with them and after they got the Six Sigma certification. However, certifications matter little to the dabbwala. What is more important to him is that the dabba should reach the customer and he or she should feel satisfied, says Talekar. Megde puts it more appropriately: “For the dabbawala, the customer is a greater king.”

Indian Science Congress Association
Young at 93
S. P. Singh

The Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) is the oldest and largest organisation of scientists in India, having been established in 1914. Nearly 100 scientists attended its first session at Kolkata and presented 35 papers. From this modest beginning, the ISCA has grown into an organisation with more than 16,000 members and now nearly 1,000 papers are presented in the annual session. The ISCA celebrated its silver jubilee at Kolkata in 1938, golden jubilee at Delhi in 1963, diamond jubilee at Chandigarh in 1973 and platinum jubilee at Pune in 1988. In 1976, Dr M. S. Swaminathan, noted agricultural scientist associated with the Green Revolution, introduced the concept of Focal Theme of national relevance, which is now discussed in every session.

The 34th Session, held at Delhi in 1947, was a landmark in the history of the ISCA, when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as its General President. Pandit Nehru’s personal interest in the ISCA continued ever after and there was hardly any session he did not attend. All the successive Prime Ministers of the country followed this tradition. The President, Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, has been a regular visitor to the ISCA sessions and he continues to interact with fellow scientists even after assuming the office of the President of India. In addition to plenary lectures, the deliberations in the sessions are carried out in 14 sections of different disciplines. Young researchers are encouraged to present their findings before senior scientists.

To encourage talents of scientists, the ISCA has instituted a number of awards in different categories. While the Prime Minister honours the distinguished scientists at the time of the inauguration, 14 younger scientists (below the age of 32), are given a cash prize of Rs 25,000 each and a certificate of merit. In addition, 28 papers, two each in the 14 sections, are selected for the cash prize of Rs 5,000 each and a certificate. In the 93rd session at Hyderabad early this year, participants saw an informal discussion between economist Amartya Sen and the Prime Minister. Nobel Laureate Richard Ernst mixed freely with the delegates and President Kalam interacted with schoolchildren.

The 94th Session of the ISCA, to be held at Amity University, Noida, from January 3-7, 2007, will focus on issues related with the Planet Earth, which include energy security, mineral resources, water resources, climatic changes, monsoon forecast and environmental sustainability. Nearly 8,000 delegates from the country and a few hundred eminent foreign scientists, including Nobel Laureates, are expected to attend the session. Professor Harsh K. Gupta, former Secretary, Department of Ocean Development, will preside over the session.

The author is the General Secretary (Outstation) of ISCA and Professor Emeritus, Kurukshetra University.
