Threat of dengue epidemic looms large
125 patients with the disease hospitalised

As the number of dengue cases recorded an increase during the past couple of days, the industrial hub of the state is facing a grave threat from the mosquito-borne disease. And in the absence of adequate preventive measures the outbreak in an epidemic form simply appears to be a matter of time.

Not to worry: MC
Ludhiana, October 3
Dengue is spreading fast in the city but the Municipal Corporation authorities do not seem to agree, if their claims are to be believed. The MC officials today told the Commissioner, MC, Mr Vikas Partap, in a meeting called to review the situation arising out of the outbreak that there were only two cases reported in city hospitals, that too came from other districts.

MP Government invites Punjab industrialists

Industry in the state, which is largely dissatisfied with the Punjab Government for having failed to give it a boost, today received a welcome invitation from the Madhya Pradesh government to set up a base there.

Dismissed patwari booked
Machhiwara, October 3
The Machhiwara police has booked a dismissed patwari, Gurdev Singh of Ikolaha village, and his associate, Parshottam Singh of Jodhwal village, for illegally adding names in one of the land records.

One held with poppy husk, opium
Jagraon, October 3
The Sudhar police has arrested Gurjit Singh of Akalgarh and allegedly seized 35 kg of poppy husk and 270 gm of opium from his possession. He was arrested from Halwara village. A case has been registered under Sections 15, 25, 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

Teachers front to protest against corrupt officials

Democratic Teacher's Front Ludhiana, said the charge sheet issued against Mr Yashpal Mehra, DEO (secondary), a day before his retirement for allegedly bungling funds meant for National Games in the city and also reports of corruption against Ms Harvinder Kaur, DEO (elementary),  has started a serious discussion among teachers about corruption in high places and its impact on the teaching community.

Teachings of Vedas highlighted
Ludhiana, October 3
The Arya Samaj, Model Town, organised its annual function in Swami Dayanand Hall of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School here today. Dharam Dev from Jalandhar was the chief guest. Addressing the audience, he said Swami Dayanand brought the Vedas from Germany, translated them and changed the society through the teachings of the Vedas.

Prof Baldeep gets grand farewell

Prof Baldeep Singh, who recently retired as Head of the English Department of Malwa College, Bondali (Samrala ), was accorded a warm send-off by his colleagues— members of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers' Union and the management of the college— at Neelon yesterday.

A week-long NSS Camp is being held at Arya College for Women. Students asked a lot of questions on naturopathy to Mr S.R. Mittal, a follower of Gandhian naturopathy, today. Mr Mittal gave tips on healthy living in tune with nature.

Basketball tourney from Oct 12

The Ludhiana District Basketball Association will organise the district basketball championship for junior boys and girls as well as men and women here at the Guru Nanak Stadium from October 12 to 14, according to Mr Gurpreet Singh, president, District Basketball Association, Ludhiana.
