Provocative, says US

Washington, October 9
North Korea’s first nuclear test in defiance of the international community has evoked widespread criticism from across the globe.

The US said the test “would constitute a provocative act, in defiance of the will of the international community and of our call to refrain from actions that would aggravate tensions in Northeast Asia” and asked the United Nations Security Council to take “immediate actions”.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said “this reported nuclear test threatens the nuclear non-proliferation regime and creates serious security challenges not only for the East Asian region but also for the international community”.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair condemned the test as “completely irresponsible act” by North Korea.

“This further act of defiance shows North Korea’s disregard for the concerns of its neighbours and the wider international community,” he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the test had done “enormous damage” to the process of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

“Russia unconditionally deplores the nuclear test... the issue is not limited to Korea, it is in the enormous damage done to the process of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the world,” he said.

Even North Korea’s close ally China said Pyongyang “brazenly undertook the test ignoring the general opposition of the international community”.

A Foreign Ministry statement said China “strongly demands the DPRK side undertake its commitments to the non-nuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and stop all actions that can lead to the deterioration of the situation”.

Japan’s new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in South Korean capital Seoul for a summit, said North Korea “will be held responsible for the situation it has created”. — PTI
