Sector 17 subway, a picture of neglect

The subway connecting ISBT in sector 17 and the market in Sector 22 is in a sad state of affairs. Garbage is strewn all over the subway and there is no proper lighting also. Further more only five of the 14 shops there are occupied.

Developed countries having a population share of 30 per cent consume more than 78 per cent of the energy generated the world over. In contrast developing nations with a population share of about 70 per cent consume merely one-fifth of the total energy.

Crime Branch to handle probe in maid murder case
Chandigarh, October 13
Investigation in the Sector 30-based maidservant murder case was transferred to the Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police today. The local police has so far failed to establish the motive behind the murder. Sources in the Crime Branch said the case was transferred this afternoon. Officials have been scrutinising the phone-call details of Archana Bharadwaj, the employer of Urmila.

Girl succumbs to injuries

An 18-year-old girl, who set herself afire after pouring kerosene on Thursday at her Shahpur Colony residence, succumbed to her injuries at PGI here this morning. In another incident, a minor girl sustained 100 per cent burn injuries in an accidental fire at her Colony Number 4 residence this morning.

BSNL Net service leaves subscribers unhappy

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Internet services in the city have taken a dip for the worse, even as BSNL is trying hard to increase its subscriber base by offering schemes and lowering tariffs. Subscribers in many parts of the city, especially those with the Manimajra exchange have complained of extremely slow broadband connection for the past few months.

Painting contest marks World Peace Day

The District Bar Association today reacted strongly to the incident of a CBI DSP Amardeep Singh, forcibly picking a youth, Rajbir Singh, from the chamber of a senior criminal lawyer, Mr A.S. Sukhija, and dragging him out of the court on Thursday.

HEALTH

More dengue cases at PGI
Chandigarh, October 13
The number of cases tested positive for dengue in various hospitals of the city has been on the rise since September 30. Twentynine fresh cases of suspected dengue were reported at the PGI today, out of which 17 belonged to Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and nearby areas in neighbouring states. Twenty cases tested positive.

Advisory on chikungunya
Mohali, October 13
With the possibility of an outbreak of chikungunya in the region, the Fortis hospital, Mohali, has issued an advisory on this disease in public interest. According to Dr Vikas Bhutani, Consultant (Internal Medicine), Fortis, chikungunya is a rare form of viral infection caused by an alpha virus that is spread by the aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus mosquito (also know as tiger mosquito).

The township on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway is set to have a mortuary by next week. Built at a cost of about Rs 10 lakh, finishing touches are being given to the mortuary complex, which will have a separate gate from the local Civil Hospital, sources said here today.
