Highway robber strikes again
Ludhiana, October 20
A highway robber, in his mid 30s, continues to strike at will on National Highway No.1 from New Delhi to Ludhiana for the past two months. After looting several persons, including local residents, he made a PWD employee from Khanna his latest victim late last night. The robber snatched Rs 15,000 from the employee, Mr Ram Prakash, alias Baankey, after attacking him with a hammer and a knife.

Cloudy Divali expected 
Ludhiana, October 20
This Divali is likely to be cloudy with the possibility of mild showers as well. According to PAU agrometeorologists, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy with scattered rain and thundershowers over Punjab and its adjoining areas during the next 24 hours.

Garbage generation up five times
Ludhiana, October 20
The garbage generation of the city has gone up by as much as five times in the city, courtesy the festivities associated with Divali. While the residents greet each other with tastefully decorated and wrapped gifts, clean and whitewash their houses, the additional litter and waste has not only played havoc with the environment, the sewerage disposal but also put a huge burden on the employees who have put on the round-the-clock duty to clean the mess.

Passersby, cops rescue bus passengers

Timely help by passersby and the police rescued around 20 passengers and driver of a private bus that had collided with a tree near Dhaipaie village on the Ludhiana-Pakhowal road, near here, last night.

Samiti stages mock hanging of Afzal Guru 
Ludhiana, October 20
Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Samiti staged a mock hanging of Afzal Guru, who has been sentenced to death for his role in the attack on Parliament, near Clock Tower here today. His hanging, scheduled to be held today, has been postponed. Samiti leader Rajiv Tandon, who was leading the activists, condemned the “selfish politicians”, who were seeking clemency for Afzal to appease the minorities.

Youth killed in road accident
Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 20
A youth of local town was killed and another injured when the scooter they were riding collided with a rickshaw at Maherna Kalan, near here last night. The Dehlon police has registered a case under the appropriate sections of law and handed over the body of the deceased after getting post mortem.

SBI takes possession of property
Ludhiana, October 20
The State Bank of India (SBI), Stressed Assets Resolution Centre, officials took physical possession of property mortgaged in the account of M/s Raytex Cycle Components in New Shimplapuri and in the account of M/s Raynolds India, also in New Shimplapuri here today for alleged default in the repayment to the tune of approximately Rs 23.29 lakh and Rs 46.36 lakh each.

GADVASU scientist to attend course in Netherlands

Pregnant women, asthmatics guard against crackers
Ludhiana, October 20
An educative programme was organised at SPS Apollo Hospital here today where harmful effects of crackers on various vulnerable groups and necessary precautions to be taken during this Divali were discussed. Pamphlets carrying precautions were distributed and a lecture session was held.

“Pyrotechnics — the science and art of fireworks is an infamous Chinese invention, along with gunpowder, paper, printing, orchestra, engines etc. Out of these, fireworks play a major role on Divali, the mother of all festivals. Services survived many anxious moments before romping home victorious 5-3 against Mizoram in the 62nd Senior National Hockey Championship for Men at Prithipal Singh Astro Turf Stadium of Punjab Agriculutral University here today. The winners were trailing 1-2 at half-time.
