Arms cache dug up from Bhakra canal bed
Our Correspondent

Fatehgarh Sahib, November 25
A huge cache of arms comprising rocket launcher, bomb shells, cartridges and ammunition was dug up from the bed of the Bhakra mainline canal.

A team of divers had been requisitioned from Panipat for the purpose. Till noon a large quantity of ammunition had been removed from the canal bed.

Mr Shiv Kumar Verma, SSP of Fatehgarh Sahib, who along with other police officers was at the spot, said there was nothing to cause panic or fear. “The ammunition being brought out from the canal looks old. It occasionally comes with the scrap being used in induction furnaces. After sorting out scrap, the industrialists might have dumped the shells and rockets into the canal,” he said, ruling out any terrorist hand in this.

The district police and the administration had been holding meetings with local industrialists to direct them that if any such material comes in scrap they should immediately inform the administration.

He said that the matter would be taken up with the departments concerned. The canal would also be cleaned up, he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Mohinder Pal Gupta, president, Induction Furnace Association, said this ammunition looked like the type which was being used in the Gulf War. Such material does not come in the scrap, he added.
