Chandigarh, November 27
The Supreme Court collegium is learnt to have recommended the name of the Bombay High Court Chief Justice, Mr Justice Harjit Singh Bedi, for elevation as Judge of the Supreme Court.

Mr Justice Bedi, who began his career on the Bench as Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was recently appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He took oath as Chief Justice on October 3. If he makes it to the Supreme Court, he will be due to retire on September 5, 2011.

Sources told The Tribune that his appointment as Judge of the Supreme Court could be cleared as early as mid-December, enabling him to take oath before the apex court closes for the winter break.

Another Judge from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Justice Ashok Bhan, is already a Judge of the Supreme Court. Mr Justice Bhan took over as Judge of the apex court on June 17, 2001, and he is due to retire in October next year.

Sources said apart from Mr Justice Bedi, the names of the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Mr Justice Vikas Sridhar Sirpurkar, and the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, Mr Justice Buchireddy Sudershan Reddy, have also been cleared for elevation to the Supreme Court.

A highly regarded Judge, Mr Justice Bedi earned a name for himself due to speedy disposal of cases. He remained Advocate-General, Punjab, and was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1987, a post which he left to take oath as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 15, 1991. He was appointed its permanent Judge on July 8, 1992.

As Executive Chairman of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority, Mr Justice Bedi earned kudos for his initiatives, many of which resulted in speedy disposal of thousands of pending cases at lok adalats.

Incidentally, his father, Justice Tikka Jagjit Singh Bedi, was also a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
