Srinagar, November 28
An Army Major and a top militant of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in an encounter at Beijbehara in Anantnag district of south Kashmir last night.

A joint party of the police and the Army, led by Major M.H. Pitambre, launched a search operation in the wee hours at Vaid Mohalla in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district. The young officer entered into the militant hideout all by himself to avoid any harm to civil population. The militant hiding in the house of Ghulam Ahmad Najar, being at a place of advantage, opened fire at the approaching officer.

Despite being critically wounded, the officer barged into the hideout and gunned down the top divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen after a long shootout, a Defence spokesman said.

The slain militant has been identified as Ashraf Shah, alias Suhail Faisal. One AK rifle, three magazines, 23 round of AK ammunition, one Chinese pistol with a magazine and five live rounds were seized from the spot.

This is a major achievement for the police and security forces as the militant commander was an IED expert and was involved in number of car blasts, the police said. He was master mind of many IED blasts, car bombs, killings and attacks on security forces, the spokesman said.

According to Brig A.K. Singh, Officiating General Officer Commanding of “Victor Force”, the last remains of the martyr Major had been sent to his family at Pune.

 Srinagar, November 28
Six tourists, including two of them from Kerala, were among 12 persons injured in a grenade attack on a tourist vehicle at Tangmarg in Baramula district this afternoon, official sources said.

The sources said unidentified militants hurled a hand grenade towards a vehicle near Traffic Control Post (TCP) at Tangmarg on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road this afternoon.

The hand grenade exploded near the vehicle, causing injuries to 12 persons, including six tourists. Two of the injured tourists have been identified as Dharam Raj and Krishan Kumar, both residents of Kerala. Their condition was stable, official spokesman said, adding the condition of the driver was critical.

The injured had been admitted to different hospitals, they said. This was the third attack on the tourists in the Tangmarg-Gulmarg area since January this year. Six of the injured had been discharged after first aid in Tangmarg hospital, the spokesman said.

The attack was being seen as yet another attempt to derail the winter tourist season in the Kashmir valley, which was picking up after recent snowfall in the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other upper reaches.

NC stands fully exposed: PDP
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, November 28
Claiming that the Opposition National Conference had been "fully exposed", the PDP has blamed it for obliterating the space for informal dialogue on matters of political and developmental importance by resorting to "wicked propaganda" through absolute lies for its survival.

"The NC leadership stands fully exposed before the public for changing colours like a chameleon to demonstrate their existence in the state," a PDP spokesman here said. A meeting of senior party functionaries was held here today under the chairmanship of the party president, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, to review the political scenario in the state.

Referring to the stand on land lease, the PDP meeting observed that the NC was stung by the reversal of its long-standing policy of allotting government land either to its own leadership or to outside businessmen through underhand means against various considerations.

"It is surprising that the party (NC) which has historically sold-out Kashmir, both politically and economically on retail and whole-sale counters, should now find fault with a bona fide decision of leasing out land to state subjects through an open and transparent process of public bidding," he said.

The PDP also demanded the setting up of a fact-finding commission to look into the assets owned by the Abdullahs in and outside the state and country, which should also have the mandate to probe into the means by which these assets were acquired and amassed over a period of time.

He said the Abdullah family had usurped land worth crores at Gulmarg, Shadimarg, Tangmarg, Gupkar Road, MA Road, Residency Road, Ganderbal, Bhatindi and several other places in the state, besides having huge assets outside as well.

Meanwhile, the PDP president and MP, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, has sought to shift the focus to effective practical discussion on a possible solution to the Jammu and Kashmir problem.

Addressing party workers at Hajin in Baramula district today, Ms Mehbooba said her party favoured empowerment of the Regional Federation for stabilising peace and economic integration in the state as new vistas of trade and sources would be available by virtue of implementation of the self-rule formula.

Vigilance unearths land scam
Tribune News Service

Jammu, November 28
The State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) today unearthed a major scandal in which a former Tehsildar had allegedly grabbed 219 kanals of government land in a posh locality of the city by forging papers a few days before his retirement.

The Commissioner of the SVO, Dr A.K. Bhan, told this correspondent that houses of the former Tehsildar, Shanti Saroop Gupta, who retired last year, and two others were raided today and documents seized from their possession.

He said the original papers pertaining to the land, that were missing from the official files, were also seized from the house of Gupta.

The land is situated in the Dilli area near the posh locality of Channi-Himmat.

The modus operandi adopted by Gupta in grabbing the land was that seven individuals claiming to be displaced persons from Pakistan filed applications with him for allotting the land to them. He obliged them although the area was not in his jurisdiction, Dr Bhan said.

Thereafter, the land was mutated on their names. However, Baldev Singh, a middleman considered an accomplice of Gupta, then approached these people and acquired the land on the basis of the power of attorney.

Dr Bhan said several documents pertaining to the land deals had been seized during the raids on their houses.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the SVO is scrutinising the land records of the areas on the outskirts of the city where government land is suspected to have been grabbed by influential persons.
