50 get sewing machines: As many as 50 women, who completed six months cutting and tailoring course, were given sewing machines by the Society For Social Health at a function organised in collaboration with the Swaran Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojna of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation at Society’s headquarters, here on Thursday. Dr Nareshanand, director of the society, said the beneficiaries were residents of Bapu Dham Colony who fall below the poverty line.

Nominations sought: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, New Delhi has invited nominations for national award from amongst the individual human rights activists/NGOs who have done outstanding fieldwork in the eradication of untouchability and in fighting atrocities under the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.

Youngest account holder: The Air Force Station, Chandigarh, branch of the State Bank of India, on Thursday opened a fixed deposit account of the youngest customer. The account for Rs 10,000 was opened by Mr B. Sri Kanth and his wife Mrs Sandhya in the name of their a day-old son Sandhya Kanth, informed the branch manager of the bank.
