RDX seizure: Jaitley for CBI probe
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 26
While former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley has demanded a CBI probe into the recent seizure of RDX and arrest of three persons from Jalandhar, the Akali Dal (1920) has termed the arrests and seizure as a “bundle” of lies.

The Akali Dal (1920) has also alleged that the recovery and arrests were “stage-managed” by the Punjab Police and its objective was to stall the ongoing formation of a third front in the state.

Accompanied by senior BJP leaders, Mr Jaitley, who was in the city today, said he had heard about the arrests and seizure of RDX from Jalandhar.

“We are not an investigating agency. We feel that a CBI probe into the incident could shed more light on the incident,” said Mr Jaitley.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference here today, Mr Ravinder Singh, chief of the Akali Dal (1920), and other senior leaders of the party - Jasbir Singh Rode, Ranjit Singh Chajjalwaddi, Darshan Singh Issapur, Tejinder Pannu and Mohinder Pal Singh Binaca - alleged that “three Sikhs were framed by the police falsely”.

“There is no truth in the incident and the story has been cooked up. If this story is proved false, both the Congress and the SAD should be punished by people of the state. This drama has been staged to prevent formation of the third front in Punjab. SAD president Parkash Singh Badal has been making false claims about threat to his life, while Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has failed to check the unbridled activities and powers of the Punjab Police.”

“The entire conspiracy has been hatched by an adviser of Mr Badal and a senior police officer of Jalandhar. We demand action against them from the Punjab Human Rights Commission,” said the Akali leaders.

Phagwara, December 26
Traffic remained disrupted on the Phagwara-Nakodar road for about half an hour today after agitated residents gheraoed the Satnampura police station in protest against the alleged inaction on its part in a dowry case.

Residents of the Bhagatpura locality got agitated when the police failed to register a case against the in-laws of a girl, Kavita Joshi, who was allegedly beaten up by her in-laws, in spite of repeated assurances by it.

Kavita Joshi (24) was thrown out of her in-laws’ house as her parents were not able to accede to their demands for dowry.

After being assaulted by her husband and father-in-law, Kavita was taken to the local Civil Hospital, where she has been admitted for the past six days.

In her statement to the police today, Kavita alleged that her husband Deepak Joshi and father-in-law had beaten her up and thrown her out of the house on December 20.

She somehow rang up her mother Shashi and brother Amit in Phagwara and told them about the incident.

They went to Ludhiana, where her in-laws live, and brought her back to Phagwara.

She was later admitted to the Civil Hospital in an unconscious state.

Talking to The Tribune at the hospital, she said she was married to Deepak in 2002 and had two sons from him.

“Soon after my marriage, my in-laws started torturing me for more dowry. I gave them Rs 50,000 after they demanded Rs 2 lakh. But they kept demanding for more.”

She was allegedly sent back to her paternal house at Bhagatpura here in August.

After staying there for some months, she was sent to her in-laws in the first week of December after some persuasion. She had been living there ever since.

The police said it was trying to effect a compromise between the two sides till the filing of the report.
