Two run over by train near Sec 47

In a gory accident, two Ram Darbar residents were crushed to death by the Chandigarh-Nangal train, near Sector 47, here this morning. While one of the victims was thrown off the elevated track into the nearby fields by the impact, the other one was chopped off by the train.

Panjab University syndicate elections remained a one-sided affair with majority of the candidates proposed by senators of the ‘rotation group’ elected unopposed. In a virtual repeat of last year’s elections, the day witnessed voting only for syndicate members from the languages, medical science and combined faculty.

An amount of Rs 1 lakh was allegedly stolen from a car outside the Punjab National Bank in Chandimandir, here today. Mr Rajiv Kumar, a resident of Sector 11, who owns a stone crusher in Burj Kotian, said he had withdrawn the sum from the HDFC bank, Sector 11, this morning.

Mr Sunil Bandha, Director of the Zirakpur-based realty firm, ONS Developers and Promoters, will be in New Delhi on Sunday in connection with the business plans of the group. Sonu Nigam, one of India’s most favourite singer, will be in town to perform at the Chandigarh Club on Sunday. Born in Faridabad in Haryana, Sonu acted as a child artiste in films like ‘Kaamchor’, ‘Ustadi Ustad Se’, ‘Hum Se Hai Zamana’, ‘Taqdeer’ and ‘Betaab’ before venturing into playback singing. He shot to fame with the song ‘Accha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyar Ka’ for the film ‘Bewafa Sanam’. Films like ‘Border’ and ‘Taal’ took him to the top of the charts, so did ‘Pukar’ and ‘Refugee’. Sonu has won many awards such as Filmfare award and Zee Cine award for his singing.

The Chandigarh Administration and marla house owners are again at loggerheads. Upset at the recent demolition drive carried out by the administration in Sector 23, marla house owners today served a 15-day ultimatum to the administration to accept what they term as ‘genuine demands’.

CCTV cameras to monitor traffic in Mohali: Dhillon

The police has drawn up elaborate plans to install closed-circuit TV cameras to monitor traffic here and to effectively seal the town in case of an emergency. Mr G.S.Dhillon, SSP, told mediapersons here yesterday that in order to monitor traffic and maintain security, 40 CCTV cameras will be installed at various points in the town.

Doctor denies charges of negligence
Chandigarh, December 30
Reacting to a news item “Doc leaves surgery midway” published in Chandigarh Tribune on Saturday, Dr Neeraj Nagpal, proprietor of Hope Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Clinic, Sector 21, said that a sum of Rs 2,200 (not Rs 7,500) was charged from the patient, Mrs Manni Devi, and a receipt was issued for the same.

Kharar reports maximum road accidents
Mohali, December 30
Kharar has reported the maximum number of road accidents in the district in 2006, followed by Mohali. At a press conference here yesterday, SSP, Mr G.S.Dhillon, said 99 accidents took place at Kharar in which 55 persons were killed and 91 injured.

A 50-year-old lineman belonging to Nada village was electrocuted today while trying to replace a faulty conductor in Sector 21. Victim Krishan Lal's body was charred as a result of the incident.

3 arrested for selling helmets without ISI mark
Chandigarh, December 30
Three persons were arrested for allegedly selling helmets without the ISI mark. The police arrested Mukesh Kumar and Kusher, both residents of Hallomajra and Chote Lal of Bapu Dham Colony, from the Industrial Area on Friday. Three separate cases have been registered under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Brig Jaswal case: Police fails to complete probe

The local police failed to complete its preliminary inquiry within two days as assured by the UT Senior superintendent of Police, in the sexual harassment controversy involving Raj Kaur, a clerk of the Directorate Sainik Welfare, and Brig J.S. Jaswal, Director, Sainik Welfare Punjab.
