Notorious nickel thief Chanderma nabbed
Ludhiana, January 2
Members of the Chanderma nickel thief gang and three scrap dealers, who had bought the stolen nickel from the gang, in police custody in Ludhiana on Tuesday. The New Year has brought a major success to the city police with the Focal Point cops finally nailing notorious gangster and nickel thief Chanderma, who had struck 19 times in various factories here.

Mann to contest from Dhuri, Dhanaula

Shopkeepers rue indifference of authorities

A heap of garbage, almost in the middle of the main market road of Doraha, is assuming alarming proportions day by day. Fed up with the callous attitude of the authorities towards their repeated requests, the residents lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana, who inturn directed the Nagar Council through the SDM, Payal, to make amends and ensure clean hygienic surroundings.

Chandigarh, January 2
Thieves decamped with Rs 12,000, gold and diamond ornaments worth thousands of rupees from a house in Sector 11.

8 booked for bid to occupy land illegally
Ludhiana, January 2
The Sadar police has booked eight persons for allegedly attempting to occupy a piece of land belonging to Mr Sukhvinder Singh, a resident of Sarabha Nagar. A case under Sections 447, 435, 511, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered.

Watchman found murdered
Ludhiana, January 2
A watchman of Nepalese origin employed with an under-construction factory, Balaji Fastners, was found murdered in his room situated at the entrance of the premises this morning.

Date sheets for board exams out
Chandigarh, January 2
The Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to start examinations for Class 12 from March 1, 2007, with the Physics paper. The examinations for Class 10 will commence from March 2 with the Social Science paper.

NSS volunteers' work appreciated
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 2
Residents of the area appreciated the projects undertaken by NSS volunteers of Shanti Tara College and Collegiate School at the concluding function organised at Jhammat village near here on Monday. The function was presided over by Mr Darshan Singh, SHO Sadar, while Mr Pritpal Singh Jhammat was the chief guest. According to Mr CP Dua, in charge of the event, the volunteers undertook various activities during the camp.

Chill keeps students away
Students of the GCW in joyous mood in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Ludhiana, January 2
Most of the city colleges, including the Government College for Women, SCD Government College, Master Tara Singh College and Khalsa College for Women, opened today after the winter break, but the hangover of the vacations could be seen on the faces of students, who were absolutely in no mood to attend the classes.

Dean of veterinary science college retires
Ludhiana, January 2
Professor K.S. Roy, Head, Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Histology, College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, retired from services after attaining superannuation on December 31. He was the acting Dean of the college from May to December 2006.
