Still detected
: The police detected a working still in Malah village, where Raja Madan Mandal of Dehreka was distilling illicit liquor. The police seized 20 kg of lagan along with .750 ml of illicit liquor and other implements of a working still. The police has registered a case under Sections 16, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act. In another incident, the Humbaran police has arrested Malkit Singh of Kotli and seized 6180 ml of illicit liquor. A case has been registered under Sections 16, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act.

One held: Amrik Singh of Jangpur was arrested by ASI Jasmir Singh and the police seized 19.2 kg of poppy husk from him. The Dakha police has registered a case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

Seminar held: The Youth Club, the gram panchayat and residents organised a seminar on drug abuse and female foeticide at Bodal village on Tuesday.

SBoP raises interest: The State Bank of Patiala has increased the interest rates on NRE term deposits from January 1, for the benefit of its NRI clients. The new increased interest rates are 6.33 per cent for one year but less than two years, 6.16 per cent and 6.08 per cent for a maturity period of two years and three to five years, per annum, respectively. The bank has also increased the interest rates on FCNR (B) deposits.

Election preparations: The Deputy Commissioner-cum District Election Officer, Mr Rakesh Kumar Verma, called a meeting of all Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers in connection with the arrangements of the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state. Mr Verma asked them to supervise the work involved in issuing of voter identity cards. He further urged all election officers to strictly follow the norms framed by the Election Commission.



Union rift
: The rift in the autorickshaw union widened here on Tuesday. Mr Ashok Boondi, who leads a section of autorickshaw drivers, filed a police complaint against a few persons, including two Congress leaders, claiming that they had threatened him. He alleged that he was ousted from the office of the union. Apparently, a few days back, a section of autorickshaw drivers revolted against Mr Ashok Boondi making Mr Nikku the president of the union. The possibility of a fresh election being held of the auto union is also being considered.

Encroachment: Police will initiate action against any shopkeeper who is found to be encroaching in Ambala Sadar. A police official said that despite repeatedly asking shopkeepers not to place goods outside their shops, they continue to do so. He said this affects the smooth movement of traffic. He said henceforth action will be taken against disobedient shopkeeper and a case will be registered.

: Shanti Sena president Sampuran Singh’s younger brother Babli died here today. He is survived by wife and children. Local MLA Dr Shiv Shankar Bhardwaj, former Ex-CPS Ran Singh Maan, HPCC general secretary Sandip Singh were among who attended his funeral.

Factory gutted
: Material and machines worth several lakhs were gutted in a fire which broke out in a plastic factory at Bhiwadi, an industrial township of Alwar district in Rajasthan, 20 km from here, yesterday.
