NGOs pour city’s woes out before Chief Justice Jain

Issues of ever-increasing pollution in the city, poor garbage disposal, violation of building bylaws, polluted Budda nullah, open slaughtering of animals and illegal plying of autorickshaws took centre stage once again today with the Chief Justice (CJ) of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Justice Vijendra Jain, expressing his dismay on the sorry state of affairs after meeting representatives of various NGOs. Mr Jain asked local officials to redress the problems and provide greener and cleaner environment to the residents.

Female foeticide: Awareness must to avert tragedy
Ludhiana, January 3
The Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Vijender Jain, expressed deep concern over the evil of female foeticide and skewed sex ratio in the state. Speaking at the annual function of local lawyers today, he appealed to all sections of society to come up against the evil.

Thousands of devotees participate in Nagar Kirtan
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 3
Thousands of devotees from the town and surrounding villages participated in a Nagar Kirtan organised by Sikh religious organisations here today. The ‘kirtan’ was organised under the aegis of the Kalgidhar Federation and Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee, Singh Sabha, to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, which falls on January 5.

The Desh Bhagat Institute of Management & Computer Sciences at Mandi Gobindagrh celebrated New Year with festivity mixed with religious fervor on the campus. It started by chanting prayers and mantras and performing a havan in the new Management Building Complex at 10 am. Dr Zora Singh, Chairman, Desh Bhagat Group, Mrs Tajinder Kaur, Vice-President and Mrs Shalini Gupta, Director, DBIMCS, performed the ritual. Shabad kirtan was recited and all faculty and staff members offered prayers. They prayed to God for giving them courage to accomplish the ongoing task of the institute successfully and attain great heights.

Dr Gursharanjit Singh Sandhu, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics of SCD Government College, has been selected by the National Board for Higher Mathematics, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, to represent the country at the International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2007) to be held at Zurich, Switzerland, from July 16-20, 2007. 

National award for PAU student
Ludhiana, January 3
Mr Rahul Laxmanrao, a student of Punjab Agricultural University, has been honoured with national award by the Indian Society of Technical Education for the best MTech thesis. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a citation. The society also gave a certificate of achievement to his advisor Dr V.K. Sehgal, coordinator of research (Agricultural Engineering). Laxmanrao worked on ‘Development of low-cost polisher for turmeric rhizomes’.
