2 killed in road mishap
Lalru, January 8
Two youths were killed and two injured when an oil tanker rammed into a Sumo on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway here last night. The accident occurred when the driver of the oil tanker, on its way from Chandigarh to Ambala, lost control and hit the Sumo.

Flt-Lieut Amarjit Singh (retd) has accompanied the Chandigarh Dynamos hockey team as manager in the third edition of the Premier Hockey League, under way at Chennai. He had played hockey for around two decades during the 1970s. He represented the country during senior national hockey tournaments in 1970, 1971 and 1973. He had also been associated with the Air Force hockey team from 1978 to 2004, national services tournaments, Federal Cup tournament (1991), junior national tournament (1992) and National Games (1997) in various capacities.

Mr V.S. Kokje, Governor of Himachal Pradesh, will be in Chandigarh on Tuesday to preside over the Six Sigma Certification Ceremony being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Northern Region Headquarters. He will give away certificates to successful participants in the Six Sigma course, conducted by the CII in five capsules for the manufacturing industry. The one-year course lays emphasis on quality maintenance and increasing productivity.

SAD to change land acquisition policy: Capt Kanwaljit

BJP rally today for dismissal of MC president

Fire in Sector 15 house

Woman claims ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh stolen from house

A day after being discharged from hospital, Sector 23 resident Bhupinder Kaur, who was drugged by her servant, today claimed that valuables worth over Rs 25 lakh had been stolen from her residence.

Man held on robbery charge
Chandigarh, January 8
The Chandigarh police today arrested Rajesh Kumar, a bakery shop owner in Sector 39 here, on the allegation of robbing a woman in Sector 11 in November last. The police said Rajesh, who was travelling in his Tata Indigo car (CH-03-Q-6925), was arrested from Dhanas this evening.

UP resident held for receiving stolen property
Chandigarh, January 8
The police today arrested a resident of Uttar Pradesh on the allegations of receiving stolen property. The police had so far managed to recover a mobile phone from him. Sources in the crime branch of the Chandigarh Police said Vinod Kumar of Baghpat district was arrested from the city following a secret information.

Travel agent held for illegal railway ticket sale
Chandigarh, January 8
A team of the Railway Protection Force arrested a Sector 22-based travel agent for allegedly selling railway tickets on the black market from the Inter-State Bus Terminus, Sector 17, this afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off, the team laid a trap and arrested Ajay Kumar of RK Travellers, Sector 22, red-handed while selling six tickets on the black market.

Machine parts, gun stolen
Mohali, January 8
Machine parts from an industrial unit in Phase VII and a gun from a house in Phase V were stolen here last night. The theft came to the notice when factory workers reported for work.

Investors get relief

The Securities and Exchange Board of India has allowed a 21-day relaxation to investors for applying for a Mutual Fund Identification Number (MIN number). As per the new guidelines, those investing more than Rs 50,000 in any scheme, need not apply for a MIN number simultaneously when they invest money.

Helmet banks for city colleges
Chandigarh January 8
With a view to inculcate road safety among the city’s youth, the Chandigarh Administration has decided to set up helmet banks in the city’s government colleges. Students coming to college without helmets can borrow a helmet for use and return it the next day at a nominal charge.

Yuvraj summoned in assault case
Gurgaon, January 8
A local court has issued summons to cricketer Yuvraj Singh and his mother Shabnam in a criminal case. The case was filed by Neelam Mahajan, who alleged in her complaint that her son Yuvraj Siddharth was allegedly beaten up by the cricketer, his mother and other relatives.

Artistes justify their roles

A Hindi adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic legend ‘Mouse Trap’ was staged at Tagore Theatre as a part of the drama festival organized by the Sandli Pairan Kala Kendra in association with the Sangeet Natak Akademy, Delhi, along with the Department of Public Relations and Cultural Affairs, Haryana, as also the Chandigarh Administration.
