More women for Haryana police

New Delhi, January 8
In a major initiative designed to uplift the status of women and also balance the lop-sided sex ratio in the state, the Haryana Government is proposing to reserve 10 per cent quota exclusively for women in its police department through an important policy decision.

The decision, which is still in the proposal stage, will have to undergo several official procedures, including a go-ahead from the Cabinet and amendment in state service rules and regulations before it can be implemented.

Officials, however, say that the state government is very keen to implement the proposal for having mandatory 10 per cent reservation for women in the police department till the level of an sub-inspector and was determined to push it through.

This, they say, will not only provide adequate representation to women in the police force, but also improve the status of women in the society. As of now, compared to the total strength of the police personnel in the state, the number of women in the department works out around three per cent.

Keeping in view the directions of the Supreme Court, each police station in the state does have a mandatory woman police cop, but problems often arise when women-related cases land up late in nights when the singular woman cop is often off-duty.
