Ms Harjinder Kaur of the SAD was elected the 11th Mayor of the city here today. In a closely contested election, she defeated Ms Anu Chatrath of the Congress by one vote.

Six PU students arrested

A fight over a girl took an ugly turn this afternoon in the Panjab University campus when six boys allegedly assaulted two youngsters. Both the victims sustained minor injuries and were later discharged from the Sector 16 General Hospital, said the police.

A young woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in a house in Phase V here today.

Woman robbed ‘under hypnotism’

A resident of Phase XI was deprived of a gold chain and a diamond ring after she was allegedly hypnotised by two persons in Phase X here today.

Four held for burglary
Chandigarh, January 11
The local police today arrested four youngsters accused of being involved in several incidents of burglary in the city. With their arrest the police claimed to have solved three cases and recovered stolen articles worth Rs 50,000 from them.

The Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi today announced the results of the short story writing competition held for college students in December 2006. Announcing the results, Dr Naresh, Chairman of the akademi, said the noted short story writers like Prof Rana Nayyar, Mr N.S. Rattan and Mr Vijay Sehgal comprised the jury for the stories written in English, Hindi and Punjabi where as the only entry in Urdu category was judged by another panel of judges consisting of Mr R.D. Tasser, Mr Kedar Nath Sharma and Mr Vijay Sehgal.

GGDSD College, Sector 32, here organised a lecture on astrology and vaastu for its students and staff on the college premises today. The talk was delivered by Dr Deepshiri from the Bhartiya Astrology and Vaastu Reseach Centre, an expert in the fields of astrology, palmistry, numerology, gemology and vaastu shastra architecture.

J&K sex scandal: Applications rejected

In the Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal, the District and Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, today rejected two separate applications of the accused: one to obtain a complete set of the statements of the victims recorded by the investigating agency, and the other for the charges under Immoral Trafficking Act being tried by a lower court.
