Punjab NCC cadets honoured

Chandigarh, January 31
Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), today honoured 62 cadets and the staff of Punjab and Chandigarh NCC who participated in Republic Day camp 2007 in New Delhi.

The Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Dr R.C. Sobti, and Deputy Director-General, NCC, Brig D.C. Katoch, along with the NCC Group Commanders and officers and staff of the education departments of Punjab and Chandigarh attended the function, which was held on the Panjab University campus, according to a statement issued here.

Addressing the cadets, the Governor highlighted the importance of NCC and asked them to come forward and lead the nation as they were the future of the country. Success, he added, could only be achieved by hard work and dedication and setting ones own goals and achieving them at the highest level.

The Governor also awarded prizes to cadets Gagandeep Kaur and Jagjit Singh who brought laurels to the Directorate by wining medals in the G.V.M.C. Mavalankaor Shooting Championship and later participated in National Shooting Championship held at Indore.

On the occasion, Brig. Katoch read out the annual report of NCC activities in Punjab and highlighted the achievements of the Directorate during the current training year.

Associating through tattooing

Chandigarh, January 31
The Indira Gandhi national Museum of Man, Bhopal will be organising an exhibition on tribal tattoos in the Seminar Hall of Department of Anthropology, Panjab University. The exhibition will remain open for the public from February 1 to February 7. The practise of getting body tattooed is prevalent in almost all human societies. This has been in existence for about last five thousand years. The tattoos are not only of ornamental value, but are also markers of identification and social classification. There are many tribal societies, which consider tattooless body as inauspicious.

According to Prof Indu Talwar, Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, PU peasant and tribal Indian societies consider tattoos as religions symbols and also auspicious.

Xavier’s student wins Science Olympiad

Chandigarh, January 31
Shayam Upadhaya of St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, emerged winner in the Combined subjects Class X (Science and Technology, Maths) during the Science Olympiad-2006 held last month. Loveleen of Dayal Singh Public School, Karnal got second place while the third place went to Harminder Singh of Mount Carmel Convent School, Chandigarh.

In the individual subjects’ category, Rahul Kapoor and Amita Punj of Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh bagged first place in Mathematics and Biology groups, respectively, whereas Harsh Kumar Verma of Convent of Gagan Bharti School, New Delhi grabbed first place in the Science and Technology group.

According to press release, The Horizon Institute of Competitions has offered free coaching to these merit holders, among other winners, in their respective next class/competitions. These merit holders can contact the above institute at SCO 267, Sector 44 C, Chandigarh.

Students put up impressive show

Chandigarh, January 31
The annual function of St. Joan’s Public School, Lohgarh, was organised at Makhan Shah Lobana Bhawan, Sector 30, here, today.

Students gave dynamic dance and music performances. The English plays-‘The Magic Goat’ and ‘Double Blanket’- were the main attractions. The tiny tots of playway and nursery classes also participated in a rocking dance performance.

Over 70 students were given prizes for their achievements.

Mr Ramesh Rana, District Governor, Rotary International, Ludhiana, Mr J.P. Gupta, ex-Chief Auditor, Co-operative Societies, Punjab, and Mr Mohan Kalsi, joint Chief Auditor, Co-operative Societies, Punjab, gave away the prizes to the winners.

Day to revive old memories

It was a day to revive old memories with college friends and batch mates for the former Sd-ians and their spouses who had got together in Shivalik View, on Sunday as a part of their winter ball. With the joint efforts of Mr Navdeep Gupta (Joint Secretary), Vivek Jolly (Joint Secretary), Bhagatjit Singh (President), Sushil Dutta (Vice President), Shudhir Ghai (Former President). There was a huge beeline for the makeshift studio, "Memorable Moments" where everybody wanted to get photographed with his or her old classmates and teachers. TNS

Foundation stone of judicial complex laid

Chandigarh, January 31
The UT Administrator laid the foundation stone of the new judicial complex in Sector 43 here today. The Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Justice Vijender Jain, was also present on the occasion.

There would be at least 30 courts in the new complex which would come up on 9 acres. The total cost of the project would be around Rs 14 crore. Besides courtrooms, the complex would have a Bar room and chambers for 1,000 lawyers.

Kabeer’s wisdom comes alive

The mega musical mono-act play veritably titled 'Kabeer' was staged at the Tagore theatre yesterday to a select city audience. Brought to the city by the Saboo Business group, was the 240th show of the play conceived, scripted enacted and produced by the noted Bollywood music composer Shekhar Sen.

Structured in the fourteenth century, ambiance of the holy Benaras city, the play is a valuable offering to an insight into the profound depth of divine poetry of the visionary sage poet Kabeer also depicted the important events of his life.

Relying on the chaste dialect close to Devnagri skillful use of chiaroscuro effects, the visual screen and the soulful recorded music, Shekhar Sen brought alive the mysticism and wisdom of Kabeer through his dexterous acting skills. He cast a spell singing and eulogising the divine poetry of Kabeer in 45 brief songs and portraying 38 different characters belonging to diverse genres. Be it his parents, wife Loi, pandit, qazi, beggar, guru Ramanand, rangrez, Emperor Imbrahim Lodhi and many more he executed the challenging female roles with an adroit mastery in voice modulation, facial expressions and spontaneous appeal.
