PGI scholar wins gold

Chandigarh, February 1
Ms Shazia Zahoor, a research scholar at PGI, has been awarded a gold medal for the best paper presentation in medical microbiology at the national conference on ‘Emerging Trends in Microbiology and Biotechnology’ held at Dr Tanveer Malawat College of Biosciences, Bikaner, Rajasthan, last month.

The paper, titled ‘Antibiogram typing and similarity matrix analysis of clinical and food Staphylococcus aureus isolates’, was a collaborative work of the PGI, Chandigarh, and Punjabi University, Patiala.

She thanked Dr Chetana Vaishnavi, Additional Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, PGI, Chandigarh, and Dr Aruna Bhatia, Professor and former Head, Department of Biotechnology, Punjabi University, Patiala, for their guidance that helped her win the award.



Mandeep emerges champ in tennis

Mandeep Singh Gill of St John’s School, Sector 26, emerged champion in the boys under-18 singles in the Administrator Open Tennis Tournament, which concluded at the lake sports complex courts here today.

In the girls u-8 category Mehak claimed the singles crown, beating Bhavika of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, 4-2, 4-2.

Earlier, Mandeep Gill and Akshat started on a promising note by winning the first two games. However, Mandeep took lead in the third game by breaking Akshat’s serve. Mandeep got another break in the fifth game and wrapped up the first set 4-1. Mandeep clinched the second set 4-2.

The other results:

Boys singles (final): Mandeep Singh Gill bt Akshat Joshi 4-1, 4-2. Semi-finals: Akshat Joshi bt Karanvir Singh 6-2, Mandeep S Gill bt Chandam Shaolin 6-5 (5).

Boys under-14 (final): Fateh Singh bt Kamal Kishore 4-2, 4-2. Semifinal: Fateh Singh bt Bikramjit Singh 6-1, Kamal Kishore bt Pankaj 6-2.

Boys u-12 (final): Digvijay bt Kamal Kishore 5-3, 5-3. Semifinal: Digvijay bt Ranjit 6-2, 6-2, Kamal bt Pankaj 6-2.

Girls under-18 singles (final): Mehak bt Bhavika 4-2, 4-2. Semifinal: Mehak bt Parminder Kaur 6-1, 6-1, Bhavika bt Harnoor Kaur 6-1.

Girls under-14 (final): Bhavika bt Ravnoor Kaur 4-1, 4-5 (4) 4-2. Semifinal: Bhavika bt Nikita 6-4, Ravnoor Kaur bt Ramneek Kaur 6-4.

Girls under-12 (final): Sonali Bansal bt Nikita 4-1, 4-0. Semifinal: Sonali Bansal bt Nandani 6-1.



Sandhya adjudged best athlete

Sandhya Yadav of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, was declared the best athlete in girls’ section while in boys’ section Aatish of Stepping Stone, Sector 37, and Joji Methew of St. Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, won the title in a two-days Inter-school Athletics Meet (under 14) boys and girls concluded at Sports Complex, Sector 46, here today.

In the meet, Govt. Model High School, Sector 42, clinched overall trophy (boys) scoring 42 points whereas Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, and St. Anne’s school, clinched overall trophy (girls) scoring 19 points each.


Under - 14 (Boys)

100 m: Gagan Deep Singh 1, Suman Kumar 2, Kanwaldeep Singh 3.

200 m: Rajbir Singh 1, Ranjit Singh 2, Simarjit Singh 3.

High jump: Sumit Hooda 1, Rahul Singh 2, Uma Karat 3.

Javelin throw: Aatish 1, Suman Kumar 2, Kuldeep 3.

Under - 14 (Girls)

100 m: Sahnaz 1, Sandhya Yadav 2, Irma 3.

Gurpartap star in MCA victory

Mohali, February 1
An overall performance by Gurpartap Singh (30 runs and 2 for 17) guided MCA XI to beat MCM Blue Caps Academy by 22 runs in the third match of the 1st U-13 APJ Cricket Cup on the MCA ground here today.

Batting first, MCA XI scored 146 runs for 7 wickets. Gurpartap scored the highest 30 runs followed by Mayank Munjal (26), Anmol (22) and Mayank Sood (21). Harpreet and Inderpreet of MCM Blues took 2 wickets each.

In reply, MCM Blues were bundled out for 124 runs in 28 overs. Abhishek scored 27 runs while Karan Khosla and Anirudh contribute 23 and 20 runs, respectively. Mayank Munjal and Gurpartap claimed two wickets each.

The next match will be played between APJ Cricket Academy, Kharar, and the Sector 16 Stadium team tomorrow.
