MeritTrac Services, one of India’s skills assessment companies, has come out with some startling facts after a comprehensive study on the “MBA talent pool” conducted by its analytics team.

The study revealed that MBA grads score low on communication skills, only 23 per cent of the management talent is employable and that Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai account for 50 per cent of the MBA pool.

MeritTrac Director Madan Padaki said: “As much as it presents a picture of challenge, the concern areas highlighted by the report can be addressed effectively.

This report is about raising the early alarm. Just to point out one such area—plain abilities performance—almost 56 per cent of the management talent pool is employable and if combined with communication skills, it drops to 23 per cent.

“Communication skills are an area that can effectively be addressed, as tools for the same are available. We hope the report serves as an eye-opener for India Inc., which is in dire need of more managers than ever before.”

The study was compiled from a sample of more than 800 MBA graduates across 6 major cities. Each candidate was tested on verbal, quantitative and mental application abilities as well as four group interaction attributes—articulation, grammar, assertiveness and confidence.

The study found skill gap in the mushrooming B-school marketplace, a fact being raised by experts for the past two years that the growth in the number of B-schools and the number of graduates they churn out has not been translated into increased employable pool for India Inc. to hire from.

The study also reveals that each city is characterised by a distinct style of performance and there is no single predictor of success in the tests across the cities sampled.

In terms of the performance of the MBA talent pool, Mumbai tops the chart as the best city to hire an MBA from due to its flashes of brilliance.

Interestingly, Kolkata emerges as the next best place due to its consistent performance across tests.

Delhi was conspicuous by its indifferent performance, while Hyderabad rallied towards the end to occupy a spot of merit. Though Bangalore and Chennai truly fell short of expectations, they maintain the competitive edge owing to the quantum of the talent pool available.

The study is aimed at mapping and bringing forth the dynamics of the quality and availability of the MBA talent pool and will aid corporates in their talent acquisition strategy by helping them identify locations and regions with specific sub-skill sets in management.

The sample selection, administering and analysis were done using the best statistical and market research tools/methodologies available. This is the fourth such report from the MeritTrac Intelligence and analytics team.

MeritTrac is a skill assessment company having assessed over 1 million candidates for over 150 customers. Neither a placement/recruitment firm nor a training agency, it is a neutral organisation that provides quantitative inputs on the talent pool and helps in measuring competencies for specific roles.

MeritTrac currently tests 60,000 candidates monthly across IT, BPO, BFSI, retail, engineering and education verticals, and operates in the US and Mauritius through business partners. It is an investee company of a fund advised by HSBC Private Equity.

Convened by the Department of Plant Breeding, the seminar was attended by nearly 150 scientists of the department and other related disciplines. Scientists from the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of Ambala, Sirsa, Bawal, Karnal and Kaul also participated.

Scientists and field staff members engaged in research activities were also honoured on the occasion. The HAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr J.C.Katyal, presented them with citations and certificates.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the seminar, Dr Katyal appealed to the participating scientists to rededicate themselves to the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant and heat-tolerant varieties of cereals, vegetables, fruits and fodder crops.

"Unpredictable climatic variations, especially the rising temperatures, have necessitated the development of such varieties which can ensure higher yields under adverse climatic conditions," he observed.

The Vice-Chancellor asserted that there was a need to abridge the gap between the production at research farms and that in the fields of farmers. Underlining the significance of developing improved seeds in larger quantities, Dr Katyal asked the extension workers to ensure that adequate quantity of good-quality seeds was made available to the farmers.

The HAU Director of Research, Dr B.S.Chhillar, and the Director of Extension Education, Dr R.K.Malik, advised the researchers to take up research work on hybrids and genetically modified crops.

Earlier, Prof R.S.Waldia, the Head of the host department, disclosed that the university scientists had developed 57 high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties during the past 10 years.5.
