Incomplete projects, lack of development and non-performing bureaucrats holding key posts in the city during the last regime made Congress candidates, especially in local segments, pay heavily in the Assembly elections.

The Congress party received a severe drubbing in Ludhiana city and all the four urban vidhan sabha seats have gone to the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal candidates respectively. The Congress has suffered this humiliation because of its own doings. It remained a divided house throughout and the local Congress leaders were not ready to reconcile to the gravity of the situation and continued to be at loggerheads. They continued to indulge in leg-pulling and never thought of uniting at any stage. As a matter of fact, the Congress leaders were so sure of their victory that they did not think of sinking their differences. Rather there are reports that attempts were made to sabotage the election campaign of one another.

Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Assembly Satpal Gosain is likely to get a Cabinet berth in the ministerial team of Parkash Singh Badal.

Budget disappoints common man
Ludhiana, February 28
City residents expressed disappointment with the union budget presented by finance minister P.Chidambram today. While increase of Rs 10,000 in the income tax limit, termed as "meagre", received flak from the salaried class and senior citizens, the finance minister was also condemned for not taking sufficient pro-tax payee measures.

Industry calls budget ‘’grossly insufficient’’
Ludhiana, February 28
Local industry rued that the finance minister "completely ignored" them in the union budget that was presented today. Industry representatives termed budget announcements as grossly insufficient. It was only the extension of technological upgradation fund (TUF) scheme for textile segment which was appreciated. Nothing was done to check inflation as well, said industrialists.

105 candidates lose security deposits

Even as the much-hyped migrant factor in the assembly polls was exposed as a lot of hot air, most of the Independents, barring three, failed to make any waves among the electorate in the district.

The Dehlon police has succeeded in nabbing one of the two undertrial criminal brothers who had made a daring escape from police custody at Latala village after chopping off a hand of a policeman and stabbing another about two months ago.

One-year jail in cheating case
Ludhiana, Feburary 28
Judicial Magistrate Tarsem Mangla has sentenced Parveen Kumar of New Chander Nagar to one year’s imprisonment in a cheating case. A fine of Rs 2000 has also been imposed upon the convict.

Harmony 2007 organised

Ludhiana, February 28
Stage is a testing ground that gives every individual to exhibit talent. Aiming the same, Harmony 2007 was celebrated with full enthusiasm in the campus of BCM School, Basant City. The prizes for academics and extra curricular activities were distributed. A cultural programme was also organised. There was a mass participation of nearly 240 students in a competitive yet congenial environment. Different items like yoga, lazium, haryanvi dance, fusion, bhangra were presented. Action song of KG Block made the audience to remain glued to their seats. air was filled with melodious songs, music, foot tappings and loud applauses. There was an exhibition of Art and craft. The whole programme was very captivating and kept the audience spell bound.
