Chandigarh, March 2
The family of Parkash Singh Badal has clear domination in the Punjab Cabinet. Apart from Badal, three more ministers are from his immediate family. They are his son-in-law Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, nephew Manpreet Singh Badal, son Sukhbir Badal's brother-in-law Bikram Singh Majithia and distant relative Janmeja Singh Sekhon.

Kairon is married to Badalís only daughter Parneet Kaur, while Manpreet Singh Badal is the son of Badalís younger brother Gurdas Singh Badal. These two were expected to be in the ministry as they have won their seats of Patti and Gidderbaha, respectively, several times over.

The surprise was Majitha. He is the brother of Harsimrat Kaur, wife of Sukhbir Badal. Being a first-time MLA, political observers had thought he would at best get chairmanship of a board or corporation. In fact, his name was cleared for a cabinet berth around midnight after the name of Sarwan Singh Phillaur, elected for the fifth time, was dropped.

Observers feel Badal should have avoided making it a family show. Adesh Partap and Manpreet Singh Badal deserved positions on the basis of seniority and Majitha should have been asked to learn the process of governance from close quarters.

Gagandeep Singh Brar, a PCS officer appointed Deputy Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, is also a relative of Badals.
