Hues of joy splashed on Holi

All roads led to celebrations Sunday morning, as revellers painted the city red with colours of joy on Holi. As the enthusiastic shrieks of “Holi hai” mingled with the constant din of trumpets and roar of engines, they zipped down the fast track of exhilaration on their bikes with silencers removed for targeting other players.

A young woman living in Shahi Majra village allegedly committed suicide last night by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

Panchkula, March 5
Thieves have broke into a house in sector 8 here and decamped with goods worth thousands. The theft came to notice yesterday when R.D. Verma, owner of the house, returned and found the lock of the main door broken.

Market crash: Long queues outside brokers’ offices
Chandigarh, March 5
Today’s crash in the stock market, the biggest crash so far this year, sent the investors and brokers in the city in a tizzy. The sensex tumbled over 471 points to reach 12, 415. 04 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today. The fall was on account of heavy selling by funds in tandem with a meltdown on the global equity markets.

UGC directs Panjab, Pbi varsities to rename degrees

The University Grants Commission has directed Panjab University here and Punjabi University, Patiala, to rename journalism degrees being offered by their departments to bring uniformity in the masters courses in the subject.

Short break during convocation

A short tea break will be part of the Panjab University convocation to be held on March 7. The convocation, which is generally a continuous ceremony, will be held in two parts this year as the President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will be in the university only for an hour. He will be delivering the convocation address on his arrival at 2.50 pm in the university and leave for the PGI at 3.50 pm.

Manish swigs his way to night golf title

It was a swig and swing event. Slightly tizzy golfers slugged it out under floodlights in the nine-hole night golf event at the Chandigarh Golf Club on Holi eve. The competition continued till almost midnight and each participant was allowed one club and a putter.
