Khud Mohalla fire: Life term for accused

In the Khud Mohalla fire case, accused Gurcharan Singh, alias Gogi of Khud Mohalla, has been convicted and awarded life sentence. The fire had claimed 16 lives.

14 students not allowed to take board exam
School failed to provide roll numbers
Ludhiana, March 6
As many as 14 students of Middle standard (Class VIII) failed to take their board exam today as their names or roll numbers were not in the list issued by the board. Today was the first examination for Class VIII.

‘Underfed, cows lived in unhygienic conditions’

The former management committee of Seth Gobindmal Chanan Ram Parmapati Gaushala, Kaind village, led by Virender Puri, a self-styled baba booked by the Dehlon police under section 429 of the Cruelty to Animals Act for allegedly detaining cows and committing cruelty against them by starving them; did not take care to feed cattle properly living at gaushala, found a team of veterinary officers of the state Animal Husbandry Department.

Tohra group emerges stronger
Ludhiana, March 6
Equations have changed in the politics of the Shiromini Akali Dal and the erstwhile Tohra group which was feeling marginalised for quite sometime has emerged stronger with the elections to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Hira Singh Gabria, now minister in the new SAD-BJP cabinet and president, city Akali Jatha, and Bikramjit Singh Khalsa - the two loyalists of Gurcharan Singh Tohra have won the elections. The third loyalist of Tohra Maheshinder Singh Grewal lost the elections from Payal Vidhan Sabha segment because of the presence of a rebel Akali Dal candidate and opposition from within the Akali Dal.

Budget has burdened public: BJP
Ludhiana, March 6
The Union Budget will put an extra burden of Rs 3,000 crore on public despite that the common man was already reeling under pressure of high inflation, said Ashok Juneja, finance secretary, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Punjab, in a press note issued here yesterday.

Pawan Kumar Kaushal, a retired headmaster, has been running from pillar to post since four and a half months to get information from the DEO(S) about his unwarranted pensionary benefit. He had sought information under the right to information (RTI) Act about his 6-month ad hoc service.

Adequate checks in place to curb copying
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 6
The education department has claimed to have made adequate arrangements to curb menace of copying in examinations being conducted by the Punjab School Education Board that commenced at various centers in the area today.

Training and placement cell of PIMT Mandi Gobindgarh is going to organise campus recruitment week for final year MBA /MCA students of the institute from March 5 to 8. This is for the second time in the institute that campus recruitment week is being conducted to facilitate students to get the jobs.

Canadian surgeons in city for camp
Ludhiana, March 6
A team of cosmetic and plastic surgery experts from Canada, led by Dr Kimat Rai, has arrived at Ludhiana Mediciti Hospital here for a free surgery camp for children with cleft lip and cleft palate. During the fortnight long camp, sponsored by Operation Rainbow, Canada, an NGO, the doctors would perform corrective reconstructive surgery on around 250 patients till March 13.

4 docs in fray for lone MCI seat
Ludhiana, March 6
With the date for withdrawal of nomination for the lone seat of Medical Council of India (MCI) to be filled from Punjab over and nomination papers of two candidates - Dr Parveen Garg and Dr Vijay - having been rejected, four candidates were left in the field. The elections to be held through postal ballot from April 12 were being conducted under the directions of Delhi High Court.

Fun, frolic at sports day

Children took part in various fun games in the annual sports day of Home and Heaven Nursery School, Model Town, here today. Dressed in colourful clothes, kids enjoyed the games. Principal of the school Inderjeet Pal Kaur and parents were present on the occasion.
