First-ever March hailstorm freezes traffic
Rainfall crosses 123.7 mm mark

Chandigarh, March 13
It poured mayhem on city roads today. As the rainfall for the month of March crossed the 123.7 mm mark, city roads wore a chaotic look. Four spells of hailstorm and 24.6 mm make it impossible for vehicular traffic to move.

Killer constable arrested
Cops say he was a drug addict 
Chandigarh, March 13
The constable of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), Punjab Police, who allegedly shot dead his colleague at Punjab Circuit House in Sector 39 on Monday, was arrested from Ludhiana, this afternoon. The police said a dispute over money was the immediate provocation for the crime.

1 stabbed to death in truck union’s clash
Mohali, March 13
One person was stabbed to death following an altercation between two rival groups of a truck operators’ union here today. Karnail Singh, a resident of Naraingarh village in Haryana who worked as a driver, was seriously injured after he was allegedly stabbed by a small kirpan. He started bleeding profusely and was taken to the civil hospital in Phase VI where he was declared brought dead. A few persons were injured in the incident.

With the CBI probing the case of building violation at Fun Republic, Mani Majra, the functioning of the building branch of the UT’s estate office has been crippled. A number of building plans and completion cases have been lying pending after the arrest of assistant engineer (AE) Brij Mohan.

Corbusier’s legacy builds bridges

Images of Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh will be introduced to the Japanese audience at a special show of the architect’s works to begin in Tokyo shortly. Titled “Le Corbusier: Art and Architecture”, the yearlong exhibition will open at Tokyo’s Mori Museum, famous for its rotating exhibitions on contemporary art.

Dera Bassi locality in dark for week
Dera Bassi, March 13
At least 10 families of Daffarpur village in Dera Bassi sub-division are virtually groping in the dark for a week following a short circuit. The feeder wire, which leads to the enclosure containing the electric meters, has been lying burnt since then. However, the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) authorities are yet to initiate any action into this, alleged Sukhwinder Singh Dhillon, a social worker.

Mohali youth held for snatching
Chandigarh, March 13
The local police claimed to have solved several cases of snatching with the arrest of a Mohali resident. The police also recovered a stolen scooter from the accused. Giving details, in charge of the crime branch of Chandigarh police inspector Satbir Singh said the accused, 20-year-old Manoj Kumar, alias Sahil, of Desu Majra village was arrested from the road separating Sectors 44 and 45 this afternoon on the basis of a tip-off.

If allegations of as many as 20 students of the Northern Institute of Information and Fashion Technology (NIIFT), Phase VII, Mohali, are to be believed the local police is harassing them on the pretext of investigations, calling them to police station time and again.

Book issuance to get smarter

Chandigarh, March 13
Panjab University library members will soon return and issue books using a computer-based recognition system. The university’s board of finance has approved an expenditure of Rs 3 crore on the installation of a system in the library that will automate the process of issuing and return of books.

The fifth day of Archo 2007, the annual festival of the College of Architecture, saw a lot of enthusiasm among the students despite weather playing spoilsport. A large number of cultural and sporting events were held. Throw ball finals took place between Maurya house and Kanishka house in which the former emerged a winner.

The second day of the ongoing Punjab University youth festival “Sinm 2007” saw the attendance of a large number of students for academic and cultural events lined up for the day in spite of inclement weather. It was law auditorium, venue for all cultural items for the day, that witnessed heavy rush of students throughout the day in spite of rain.

Judicial custody for Brij
Chandigarh, March 13
The CBI Special Judge today remanded assistant engineer Brij Mohan in judicial custody till March 26. Though the CBI sought a five-day extension in police remand, the AE was sent to judicial custody.

Jaundice strikes Zirakpur
Zirakpur, March 13
Panic has gripped the Lohgarh locality of Zirakpur following the outbreak of jaundice even as the Health Department got its act together today. A team of health officials under the supervision of the senior medical officer (SMO) of Dera Bassi civil hospital, Dr Ram Kumar, conducted a medical camp at Lohgarh with a view to screen suspected jaundice cases.
