Beas, March 14
Immediately after the prestigious Beas Assembly seat was won by Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Manjinder Singh Kang, the Majitha police today conducted raids to nab absconding former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa, who lost the seat by 4,179 votes.

Maintaining its winning spree, the SAD has raised its tally of MLAs to 50. Of the total 1,09,229 votes polled, Kang got 53,014, followed by 48,835 polled by Dimpa. Dimpa had won the last election in 2002 after defeating Kang by a margin of 6,950 votes. The rest of the candidates who lost their security deposits are BSP's Tarsem Singh (955), Sunder Singh (870), Bakshish Singh of BSP-Ambedkar (133), Amrik Singh (1,922), Sukhwinder Singh (98), Harjinder Singh (131), Jasbir Singh (423), Manjinder Singh (236) and Lakha Singh (1,304).

The raids were conducted at possible hide-outs of Dimpa in Amritsar and other districts. The police is also monitoring the calls made by his close friends. Two criminal cases - killing of an Akali worker and attempt to murder — are pending against Dimpa.

District police chief Lok Nanth Angra briefed the “progress report” of the raids to Sukhbir Singh Badal, working president of the SAD, who is evincing keen interest in the case. Dimpa slipped away from Rayya, after the polling ended, without informing his security guards.

Though the SAD thanked the voters for giving their verdict in favour of the ruling party, the margin of victory is far from expectations.
