Rs 133.43 cr for development works
Rs 418.43-crore MC Budget presented

Ludhiana, March 15
With the government allocating around Rs 700 crore for the municipal corporation for various projects under the City Development Plan, Ludhiana may witness all around development during the next fiscal year. The work will start as soon as the grant arrives and the MC will contribute its bit by curtailing expenditure on other development projects or by generating revenue from other sources, including the sale of property.

PSEB to issue spot electricity bills
Ludhiana, March 15
City is set to become the first city in the state to issue spot electricity bills. The Punjab State Electricity board (PSEB), which would get this work done from a private party, has already issued more than 50 hand held computers to a special team for generating bills on the spot.

Three power board men injured

Three PSEB linemen Nirmal Singh, Darshan Singh and Gurnam Singh were injured due to electrocution during the repair work being conducted at the feeders in the Prem Nagar locality of Mandi Gobindgarh on Wednesday.

Noisy scenes were witnessed on the floor of the municipal corporation House when councillor from ward number -3 Rajiv Katna raised the issue of uncovered manholes in the city stating that nobody cared for these death traps.

In the course of a stepped-up drive to unearth concealed income and enforce tax compliance, the surveys conducted by income-tax officials on a couple of business houses all through Wednesday, led to surrender of Rs 1.61 crore.

Rain damage assessed
Ludhiana, March 15
S. S. Channy, principal secretary, department of labour and employment, today visited around a dozen villages of Samrala sub division and assessed the extent of damage to wheat and other crops because of the recent hail storm and heavy rains. He was accompanied by Sumer Singh Gurjar, deputy commissioner, Baldev Singh, SDM, Samrala and other revenue officers.

Citizens council poll on March 31
Ludhiana, March 15
The election for the post of chairman of Ludhiana Citizens Council (LCC) for a five-year term (2007-12) will be held at Hotel Baron here on March 31. According to the LCC secretary general Ashok Juneja, the elections will be conducted by the returning officer, Ravi Kant Gupta, who has been nominated as returning officer for this purpose.

Tricksters offering to double money nabbed
Ludhiana, March 15
The focal point police has nabbed four tricksters who were allegedly duping people by offering to double their money. The accused gave them fake currency, with one side plain and other of Rs 50 denomination, in lieu of the actual money.

One held with opium 
Jagraon, March 15
Ajmer Singh of Dalla was arrested by the local police from Agwar Khawaja Baju. The police recovered 180 g of opium from his possession during patrolling. Case under section 18, 61, 85 of NDPS Act has been registered.

Illegal kerosene lands man in jail

Charanjeet Arora, judicial magistrate, has sentenced Hans Raj of Ram Bihari Colony, Tajpur Road, Ludhiana, to imprisonment for six months on the charges of possessing huge quantity of blue-colour kerosene oil illegally without any licence.

Dairy, poultry farmers to be honoured

Balraj Singh Khaira, a progressive dairy farmer of Malsian, and Ranjit Singh Sidhu, an innovative poultry farmer of Naudhrani, from the districts of Jalandhar and Sangrur, respectively, will be jointly felicitated with the Chief Minister’s award in animal husbandry during the Pashu Palan Mela on March 17 and 18 at the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana.

PAU Kisan Mela to focus on ecology

The main focus of the Punjab Agricultural University Kisan Mela this year would be to save environment. The theme of the mela, according to the Vice Chancellor, KS Aulakh is Save Environment Save Punjab. The two day mela would be inaugurated by the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Vijendra Jain, on March 17.

Buy books at your price!

A special book stall is being set up by S. S. Dosanj of the Readership Movement, at the Kisan Mela on February l7 on the Punjab Agricultural University campus. The special feature of the book stall would be that the farmers would be able to buy books of their favourite authors at the price which they deem fit. This book-cornucopia will have books worth more than Rs one lakh. Farmers can buy the and put the amount, which they think is worthy of the book and fits their pocket in a "golak" (tin box).

The two-day PAU Kisan mela scheduled to be held from March 17 is set to attract a number of farm-women at the sprawling PAU campus. The Home Science College will hold competitions in the use of peeler and chopping board, preparation of products from sprouted pulses, use of left over fabrics etc.

FCI badminton meet
City shuttlers in last eight

Ludhiana, March 15
Ludhiana survived some anxious moments before romping home victorious against Ferozepur in the men's section and advanced into the last eight stage of the 7th Food Corporation of India Inter-District Badminton Tournament, which began at Punjab Agricultural University campus grounds here today. Hosts managed to prevail over their opponents 3-2 to assure themselves a berth in the quarter finals.
