APPOINTED: Paramjit Singh Majhail has been appointed senior vice-president (Punjab) of the legal wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal (B) by president of the wing Harish Rai Dhanda.

Donation: US-based NRI Satwinder Singh Randhawa met Punjabi University vice-chancellor S. Swarn Singh Boparai here on Saturday and pledged Rs 2.4 lakh as Golden Heart Scholarships for rural and needy students.


resentment: Residents of EWS Colony, Sector 32, are a harassed lot as power supply trips frequently, thanks to the faulty transformer of the area. Resident Ashok Kumar Ghai said he had complained to the department concerned repeatedly, but to no avail. Studies of the children, who are preparing for the examination, have been hit.

GET TOGETHER: To mark the passing out of the Officers Training School, Madras, 25 years ago, serving and retired officers of the course, now posted and settled in and around Chandigarh, recently got together at the DSOI, Sector 36, with their families and reminisced the day. On March 13, 1982, 142 cadets had passed out as second lieutenants.

BODY FOUND: The body of a resident of Khanna was found near the fountain park in Sector 70 here on Friday. According to the police, deceased Balbir Singh worked as a labourer in the Sohana mandi. He might have fallen into the water body under the influence of liquor.

Tax opposed: Condemning the proposal of the municipal council to impose house tax in the town, municipal councillor Kuljit Singh Bedi demanded that such a move be stopped. He said residents of the town would unitedly oppose it.

New department: Fortis Hospital launched its department of neurosurgery here on Friday. Dr V.K. Jain, one of the pioneers of modern neurosurgery in India, is the director of the department. Dr Jain said the department was equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical facilities.


FUNCTION: The annual prize distribution function of S.A. Jain College, Ambala city, was held at college on Friday. Former professor Gian Chand Sood presided over the function. A souvenir, containing research papers, was released. Trophies were presented to outstanding  students.

CHAIN SNATCHED: Two youths, who were riding a motor cycle, snatched the gold chain of Charnjit Kaur, a resident of Jasmeet Nagar, near milk plant at Ambala city on Friday. They couldn’t be identified as they had muffled their faces.

PROGRAMME: A cultural programme was held at Kharga Nursery School, Ambala cantt, on Friday. Pranav Dhingra, Tanveen Kaur Bhatia, Araadhya Jain, Dipanya Das, Jai Malhotra, Ridhima Jain, Kanishk Syal, Yoshita Dharni and Alyuosha Bhambri won prizes in different events.


Strike ends
: The two-day workers' strike in Alembic Pharma at Jharmajri near Baddi ended on Saturday after the company’s management accepted the demands of the workers. Over 150 contract workers of the unit had gone on strike after their contractor failed to provide them EPF and ESIC deposit slips.
