SJC meeting in Pak put off
Afzal khan writes from Islamabad

The hearing in the presidential reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry before the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) scheduled for today has been postponed to April 3. An announcement in this regard was made by the SJC secretariat.

The postponement paved the way for the reconstitution of the council with second senior-most Supreme Court judge Rana Bhagwandas taking over as its chairman. Justice Rana will take over as acting Chief Justice on return from his leave abroad, the SJC press note said.

Rana was said to reach Lahore from New Delhi later this evening. Media reports said he might resume duty on March 21. But the postponement of the hearing, however, remove any urgency and Rana may take over on March 24.

In a related development exiled premiers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif have set a meeting in London tomorrow, their party spokesmen announced here. The two leaders will meet in the backdrop of the current judicial crisis.
