Dehra Dun, April 5
Notorious thief Angrez Singh (45), who was also known as 'Jewel Thief' as he mainly targeted leading jewellers' showrooms in north India, was killed in an encounter at a posh hotel in Nagpur yesterday night.

Members of his gang, including his two wives, brother, son and others, operated in UP, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Delhi where jewellery worth about Rs 5 crore was looted by them in about half a dozen cases. He was also involved in thefts of arms and vehicles. He belonged to a marginal farmer family from Ferozepore.

He, along with his brother Mukhtiar Singh, son Sonu and three other accomplices, had escaped from police custody in Bollywood style in November last year when he was being taken to court from sub-jail in Roorkee. One of his wives had masterminded the escape. He carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head.

As per Garhwal Range DIG Ram Singh Meena and SSP, Hardwar, Abhinav Kumar the arrest of Angrez Singh was a major challenge for Uttarakhand Police. Special Operations Group (SOG) formed to arrest him was after him ever since his sensational escape. Intelligence inputs and electronic surveillance finally established his presence in Skylark hotel in Nagpur. In a joint operation, SP of Hardwar Mukesh Kumar and Special Operations Group in charge R.B Chamola along with Nagpur police personnel nabbed his wives- Rattan Kaur and Bachhan Kaur, brother and son from the hotel rooms. But, Angrez Singh, when challenged, started firing on the police party and was killed in exchange of fire. Constable Deepak Arora of Hardwar police was injured in the encounter.
