Chandigarh, April 6
Less than a fortnight after the transfer of Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Viney Mittal to Madhya Pradesh High Court, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is learnt to have cleared the transfer of another local judge - Justice Virender Singh - to Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

According to sources, Justice Virender Singh would be asked to join at Jammu on or before April 20.

It could not be confirmed if the High Court authorities and the judge in question have received the formal orders.

With his transfer, both the judges whose names had cropped up during hearing of a public interest litigation over the Forest Hill Gold Club for having taken ex-officio membership of the club, now stand transferred from the High Court here.

Incidentally, both had also been issued show-cause notice by the then Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court B.K. Roy for having taken free membership of the club.

The Tribune had on January 11 first reported about the move initiated by the Supreme Court collegium to transfer out both these Judges.

In Justice Viney Mittal’s case, apart from accepting ex-officio membership for himself, he had also got his two sons - Avnish and Ratnish - made ex-officio members of the high-profile club, whose membership fee ran into lakhs of rupees.

After coming to know that the two judges had taken ex-officio membership of the club, Chief Justice Roy had issued show-cause notices to them, asking them to explain their position.

To this, both judges had replied, questioning the authority of the Chief Justice to issue such a notice to them.
