Forum quashes PSEB demand
: District consumer forum quashed a demand of Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) of Rs 24, 000 from Jagir Singh, a resident of Bhushan village. The complainant said the board had issued him a memo on December 4, 2006, in which the said amount was demanded from him for an alleged power theft. The PSEB had claimed that a junior engineer had found Singh using a kundi connection, the latter said false charges were made against him.

Relief for rain-hit: The Punjab government has given a grant of Rs 2.79 crore to farmers whose standing wheat crop had been damaged in Hoshiarpur district during the recent torrential rains and hailstorm.

Smack seized: The district police on Tuesday arrested Sanjay of Bege Ladgana in Dharbanga district of Bihar), presently living in Gandhi Nagar, Jalandhar, and Kuldip Singh, alias Deep, of Khurda and seized 16.5 gm of smack from them. Two separate cases have been registered under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act against them.

INCREMENT: The Computer Teachers Union (Punjab) held a meeting at Baradari Gardens here on Wednesday. Union leader Hardeep Singh Sidhu said the teachers who had the degrees like MIT, MSc software, BIT, BSc-IT and B-Tech were not granted increment though a notification had been issued by the previous government in that regard.

HEALTH DAY: The local Red Cross Society organised a function to mark World Health Day at Jasdev Singh Sandhu College of Education, Kauli, here on Wednesday. Rural development and panchayat minister, Punjab, Ranjeet Singh Brahmpura was the chief guest. He exhorted the youth to be physically and mentally fit and keep away from drugs. Former chairman of the SSB Tejinder Pal Singh Sandhu, Principal of the college Rajinderpal Kaur Sidhu, Anil Salyan of Saket De-addiction Centre also spoke.



: A meeting of the Punjabi Welfare Sabha (Punjabi sabha) was held at hotel Pallavi to elect its office-bearers. The following have been elected executive members: President - S. K. Nayar; secretary-general - Ravinder Rawal; chief adviser - Inderjit Setia; adviser - S. K. Kalra; and senior vice-presidents - Lily Bawa and N.R. Wadhwa.



: Bhoom Singh Rana, who has been removed as president of the District Youth Congress (rural), on Tuesday termed his expulsion as undemocratic. Rana said no written notice had been served on him before he was expelled.

: Financial commissioner and principal secretary (power), Haryana, Ashok Lavasa inaugurated a technical training school at 132 KV sub-station here on Monday. He said owing to advancements in engineering and technology, the technical training of the staff had become a necessity. Managing director, HVPNL, P.K. Das said the a similar institute at 220 KV sub-station Madanpur, Panchkula, would be opened soon.
