Quarrel leads to death

A quarrel between two shopkeepers in Sector 34 took a deadly turn this morning, when one of the shopkeepers, 58-year-old Lal Chand Gupta, collapsed. He was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.

Development in the town comes to a grinding halt for maintenance works worth over Rs 2 crore have been stayed by the department of local government. The proposed estimates for maintenance works in various areas of the town were cleared by the House at a meeting of the Municipal Council on March 22.

Couple booked for cheating
Chandigarh, April 12
The local police booked a Sector 29 resident and his wife for duping a man of Rs 2 lakh on the pretext of selling a house which did not belong to them. The police said the house owned by the UT administration was given to Kashmiri families under the rehabilitation scheme and it could not be transferred or sold by the residents.

Mohali man held for harassing French woman
Chandigarh, April 12
The local police arrested Mohali resident Rajinder Chauhan for harassing a French woman on the road dividing Sectors 43 and 44 on late Wednesday night. He was reportedly caught by the traffic police.

BCom final-year students of Panjab University have alleged anomaly in the income tax question paper. The students alleged that the evening session paper of the direct tax laws was set as per assessment year 2005-2006 whereas it should have been set in accordance with the assessment year 2006-2007.

Chandigarh: Students of electronics and communication engineering (ECE) and information technology (IT) of the Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET), Ramnagar, Banur, have brought laurels to the institute as some of its students secured the third, and ninth positions in the B.Tech examinations conducted by Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar, held in December 2006.

Jagjit Singh concert tomorrow
Chandigarh, April 12
A Jagjit Singh concert will be held at Nehru Bhavan, Sector 24, on April 14 to celebrate Baisakhi. To be organised jointly by the Durga Das Foundation and The Tribune, the ghazal concert was postponed earlier due to rains.

Study on asthma at other centres too

A study on asthma and other allergies among people over the age of 15 has been extended to other centers, including Shimla, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bikaner, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Mysore with coordinating centre at Chandigarh.

Rare bone surgery performed
Mohali, April 12
Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib (C) Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sohana, has claimed to have performed a rare bone tumour surgery. A press release stated here today that 24- year-old Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Sarkaghat in Himachal Pradesh, was diagnosed with a malignant bone tumour in his left leg.

Local cricketer makes strides
Chandigarh, April 12
City boy and budding cricketer Veer Karan Goyal has been selected in the Chandigarh under-15 team for the Sushil Bali Trophy being organised by the PCA from April 15 to 30. Karan, a student of St John's High School, Sector 26, had earlier represented Chandigarh at the school nationals in 2005 and 2006 in the under-14 category.

Cricket trials today
Mohali, April 12
Trials to select the u-17 Mohali district cricket team will be held tomorrow at 3 pm at PCA cricket stadium, C-Ground, here. Only players born after August 31, 1990 can participate. The selected team will participate in the Punjab inter-district tournament, from which the Punjab state team will be selected for the inter-state championship.
