Rataul new Arhtiya chief
: Gurminder Singh Rataul, chairman of the local market committee, has been elected district president of the Federation of Arhtiya Association. Arhtiyas from 35 mandis of the district participated in the meeting here today to elect the president.The Federation said Vajay Kumar Kalra and Ajit Singh Sohal state president and the chairman of the federation participated in the meeting. Rataul has been given the rights to form the district body. — OC

Horse riding
: The horse riding team of Kirpal Sagar Academy, near Rahon (Nawanshahr), has brought laurels by bagging as many as 32 medals at riding show organised by the Army Polo Club, Delhi Cantt, recently. More than 50 teams (age group 7-21) from Madras, Mysore, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh, Gujarat, Delhi and Punjab participated in the competition. The teams of PPS from Nabha and Kirpal Sagar Academy represented Punjab. The riders are Davinderjit Singh, Amritpal Singh, Sukhjinder Singh, Gurniwaj singh, Arshdeep Singh, B. Dowry case
: The Tanda police booked Satnam Singh, his father Tara Chand, and Balbir Kaur, all residents of Ludhiana, under sections 498-A, 406 and 34 of the IPC on Tuesday evening. According to police sources, Reena Rani, daughter of Kishan Kumar of Urmur, alleged that these members of her in-laws’ family maltreated and tortured her for more dowry. — OC

Fire in dera: Fire broke out in the dera of Ali Hassan and Sher Ali at Meerpur village in Mukerian on Tuesday night. According to police sources, all the household articles, including clothes, blankets, utensils, two bicycles and Rs 45,000 were reduced to ashes in the fire. — OC

Conference
: A two-day annual conference of Tarksheel Society would be held held on April 14 at Barnala. In a press release issued here, medical chief Sumit Singh, stated that besides presenting the annual report, conference would also discuss the next plan of action of the society. He said the delegates would also interact on various issues concerning to society including of casteism, blind faiths, deraism and drugs menace. — OC

It has been prepared in association with the NSS department of Punjabi University. This was stated by Dr Kulbir Kaur, head of the bank, here on Thursday.

WORKSHOP: Civil surgeon Rakesh Gupta inaugurated a workshop on acute flaccid paralysis at his office here on Thursday. He stressed the importance of acute flaccid paralysis surveillance in detection of polio cases and in eradication of the disease from the country. DECISION HAILED: R.K. Sharma, president of the non-teaching employees federation of non-government aided colleges of Chandigarh, on behalf of the association hailed the decision of GGDSD College management to contribute provident fund on gross salary. He thanked the teachers union of the GGDSD College, principal and president of its management Upkar Krishan Sharma for keeping a positive attitude towards the employees of the college. LAUNCHED: Mukat Hospital and Heart Institute here has introduced cosmetic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery facility in its hospital. RLY WINS SHIELDS: Divisional railway manager, Ambala, H.K. Jaggi on Thursday said Ambala railway division had won eight shields, including that for best overall performance in Northern Railway. The division had won the highest number of shields this year. The shields were presented to railway officials at a function held in New Delhi recently. — TNS
